View Full Version : Question about bandwidth for hosting server

Hi everyone, currently I'm hosting my site/forum on GoDaddy with the whole unlimited plan and everything. Due to recently being informed that comcast has a bandwidth limitation per month and I'm going over it, I'm highly considering switching to business class and starting to revert everything from my forum in a business like manner...no longer hobbyish.

Anyways, the reason for my post is I'm considering hosting my site on a server of my own in my own location for learning purposes because I've never done so. My question is what is acceptable speeds to give a still seemingly good experience for my members? The package I'm looking at getting is 12 Mbps download which is great but 2 Mbps upload and I'm not sure how great that upload speed will actually be in reference to running the site. I think the next package up is 5 Mbps but it still seems on the low end of things.

Now currently on GoDaddy I don't have a dedicated server so which means I'm more than likely sharing bandwidth with other sites.

Info about my site: We have about 2000 members joined but active at one moment typically is 8-20 people depending. I'm running VBulletin 3.7.3. I would be looking to Build a Linux Box. I understand the hardware aspect of it to make things more responsive but just curious as to the actual internet speed and whether or not its good enough.

Sorry for running on but just wanted to be thorough. Your help is appreciated.

I'm not sure if hosting a server at your home or business location is a good idea if that single broadband connection is possibly your single point of failure. Most serious hosting providers have multiple backbone connections for a reason. So if uptime and speed is important for you I would rather get a dedicated server hosted or co-located at a decent datacenter.

Just my 2 cents though.

I appreciate your response. Thats also something to consider as well.

At this time you do not need a dedicated server, your site should fine on shared hosting plan for now, that would give you a better network, server that is fully managed and save you a lot of cash until you actually need one.

I would not host at home with anything less then 5 mbit connection.

I don't think you need a dedicated server that would be over kill. Try to find a good hosting company. And remember there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth and space.

I am very with my current host after switching several times.
