Hi all,

I am Karel and owner of a dutch computer support forum
Now we hosted on a shared hosting but since we are getting quiet big we see that the site goes quiet slow.

Now i consider a VPS because i think thats the best solution. Now a important question is (i think) the available RAM?

Now i would like to have some advice before making my decision.
I give you some statistics about my site:

Now what is your advice concerning a VPS?
This is the information of my current hosting and their VPS packages:

All VPS are hosted on (equal or more)

- Redundant power supply
- Disks in RAID 10 for optimal speed
- 1gbit netwerk uplinks
- OS: Linux

Virtualisation Software: XenEnterprise with QoS for CPU, network, IO, VLan's to guarantee good performance. cold spare server available to prevent network problems.

[ VPS1 ]
- 5 GB webspace
- 50 GB datatraffic
- 128 MB RAM

[ VPS2 ]
- 10 GB webspace
- 100 GB datatraffic
- 256 MB RAM

[ VPS3 ]
- 20 GB webspace
- 150 GB datatraffic
- 512 MB RAM
- Dual Cores

[ VPS4 ]
- 30 GB webspace
- 200 GB datatraffic
- 1024 MB RAM
- Dual Cores

[ VPS5 ]

The most important for me is that the website is fast again and we are safe for a time, keeping in mind the actual grow.

Looking forward to your advice...

Thanks,

I would go with 256MB minim. but more if you plan to install a control panel.

The packages comes with Direct Admin control panel?
So then you would choose more?

If you get a chance, check out urljet.com i think you will be very surprised.

The hosting service i was with for the last 5 years, has been telling me that i need to move to a dedicated server because of my site size. I was receiving database errors everyday, upto 300 errors in one group of emails a day over max_user_connections, blah blah blah. I contacted urljet whom i found from vbulletin.com's website. Urljet replied within a couple of hours, and answered all of my questions asap. I then decided to give them a try, purchased space on a shared server. Urljet did all of the work, for free, to move my site to their server.

Since being on urljet for about a week now, i have not recieved 1 database error email. My users have also commented in a post about how much better the site now runs. The server speed is just awesome and had i known about urljet a few years back, i would have moved then.

Like i say, atleast shoot them and email and see what you think. I don't think you will regret this email. This company totally manages your site for you, and not after you start having hundereds of error emails.

If you go for a VPS with DirectAdmin, 256MB should be OK. But ask the hoster whether you can upgrade to the higher plans seamlessly.

If control panel is included with the VPS then I'd suggest you to go for 512MB RAM, as it would ensure smooth and seamless functioning of your VPS.

Karel, ask your current host how much ram is on the shared server you are on and also what cpus are in it, after this ask them the amount of resources, ram-cpu you actually use. Then decide if vps is needed, for all we know you are using 1 to 2 gig of ram there and 70% of the cpu. It could also be that they have added some new sites to the shared server which are resource hogs, therefore slowing your site down.

For you, 256 mb ram would be okay if you dont use a heavy control panel. But above 256 would be ideal.

Lets hope, we hope we can move next week.
For the moment i see a high server load and at busy moments values up to 20

At a normal time we see at least 4 or 5

So time we are moving i think :-)
