Hi,
We run a busy forum at http://soapchat.net and sadly our host of ten years went belly up and we are left homeless.
We around around 10 thousand concurrent users.
I gather the way to go is a dedicated server but I have also seen a virtual server.
What is the difference and what are the benefits?
Im not technical at all and this is all a bit confusing for me.
Thanks

Would you mind telling us exactly what type of hosting system you had before? All technical data you have lying around could be of use. Also, I have doubts on whether or not you have 10K concurrent users, perhaps you mean total users.

What's your current disk & bandwidth usage? And what's the size of your DB (in MB/GB)?
What's the stats of your vB? -- posts/threads/total users/active users/max online etc?

As above if you have any info regarding disk and banwidth useage and also DB size it will help people to advise better.
But I would recommend speaking to Tim at Global Gold (http://www.globalgold.co.uk) as they specialise in vBulletin hosting and I'm sure they would be able to sort a package out for you. We've been with them about a month now after switching from a dedicated server (now on a Vitual server) and we have experienced an increase in forum speed over the old dedicated server.

Are you sure its 10k concurrent users?
If yes, then a even a single server won't be enough for such requirement. You will need to think beyond Dedicated Server.

10 thousand concurrent users.
On a shared server, this will not work.
Like mentioned earlier in the thread, if you have that many concurrent users you are looking at more then just one dedicated server, more like a load balanced cluster.

One month in no way is enough time to recommend a host like this. Please come back in 6 months to a year and let us know how it went.

Same as us. We switched to GlobalGold after speaking with Tim just over a year ago, and we haven't looked back. I'd heartily recommend them :)
Just had a look at your forum and we're of a similar size too. (Although you have alot more guests online than we do)

I have a fairly large site with a bunch of information stored around my site. The host company i was using, which i had been with for 5 years, said that my site was taking up so much space they were trying to force me to a private dedicated server. I did a bit of searching here at vbulletin.com and found a link to www.urljet.com and sent them an email. Urljet answered every question i had about my website. So i paid for 1 month worth of space on one of his servers, urljet moved my entire site for me, for free.
My site is currently faster then i can ever say it was using my other host company. If you really want a host company with great, and i mean great customer service....Try shooting urljet and email and see what happens, i think you will be as impressed as i am about this company. Heck, even my users of complimented how great our site speed is now and i am no longer receiving upto 300 database errors on a daily basis. As matter of fact, i haven't had an error since moving to urljet.

I moved to a dedicated ar URLJET a few months ago. We operate numerous VB Forums. I have been pleased with their customer service. Repsonse times are amazing. My only regret is not finding them sooner.

Someone might need to tell the urljet company they need to remove this or pay their dues.
This business's BBBOnLine participation has lapsed for one of the following reasons:
Non-payment of the annual BBBOnLine license fee or BBB Accreditation dues;

Morning folks.
I've been with Global Gold since June 2000. Hopefully that permits me to speak incredibly highly of their products and services, having hosted my busy magazine and forum for many years in a professional and able manner.

Absolutely right, URLJET is the best for Vbulletin hosting .I am also hosting my forum with urljet from past 7 months. My forum is faster than ever before bcoz of their litespeed servers and also secure with file guardian.I think for a big forum , a regular backup is important just like oxygen for humans and that what URLJET do for free an hourly backup.send them a email and see what they suggest for you.

I do see a lot of recommendations for URLJET on other threads as well. If these are not spam, they must be really good.
