wasnt there a version check code we would put in the address bar to check the version of the forums software running?
like...www.site.com/forums/index.php?version
or something like that?
then the page loading would have the information of the forum version on there?
i couldve sworn there was something like that...

There's a command to trigger phpinfo, which shows php version informations, and other server related information. This only works in control panels unless the administrator have it enabled for all pages. It does not show your forum's version information.
To see your forum's version information, login to admin cp, and it will display on the top frame. If the forum is not yours, and they've gotten their version number hidden, then chances are, you shouldn't be poking at it ;)

Check the source code of the site. You might see:
<meta name="generator" content="vBulletin 3.8.1" />
