Anyone here have a dedicated IP address for their forums? I'm on a shared hosting plan because my forums aren't very popular yet, and they are offering a dedicated IP for a couple extra bucks a month. The selling feature is that it may perform better in search engine results.

Im sure people here have a dedicated IP address, but is it worth a few extra bucks? Have you notice a difference? Were you on a shared system when you bought it? Does buying it on a shared system make it pointless?

If anyone has any information on this it would be greatly appreciated.

It allows you to install SSL certs.

Ah, yeah good point. SSL is mainly used for ecommerce though isn't it? Would a dedicated IP be useless unless you get the SSL To go with it?

I did a quick google on the SEO benefits and kind of wish I did it sooner. It will be interesting to see if the traffic pics up and my page rank gets up there. When I was updating every day and making alot of new content I was climbing up the ranks, but with school I fell behind quite fast during the last couple of months.

Switchings hosts three times didn't help either. Ill update this if I get a noticible amount of traffic from the search engines. I noticed some of my adsense ads were not as lame either, some of them are even companies from my area. It could all just be my imagination though of course.

Now all I need is a way to get my two forums sharing users so I can network them together and have one seamless system.

even a shared server (provided you are getting your hosting through a webhosting company, which I presume you are) will be hosted on a dedicated IP. A dedicated IP is what tells the internet that www.your_site.com is sitting on 123.456.789.123

Without it, you would have a very hard time matching the 2 (unless you got a dynamic DNS service and this is only if you're running your vb install on a maching sitting under your desk at home).

I personally dont know of 1 webhosting company that will put you on a dynamic IP, that's just bizarre.

I think the question here is about a dedicated IP, not a dynamic IP. Many hosting companies do not give you a dedicated IP unless you buy it separately. You share that IP with other people, but it is still static.

One of the biggest reasons I like dedicated IPs for sites I run is that you don't have to be concerned about what anybody else on that IP does. Say, for example, somebody else who just happens to be on the same IP as you are is a black hat or is running an objectionable site or is using the space to send spam email. There's a good chance that that IP address will get blocked from many servers because of that other site. Of course once the IP is blocked that site is blocked... but so is yours. You might not even realize that half the internet can't see your site because the IP is blocked.

Just about all shared web hosts put multiple domains on the same IP address though by using virtual hosts. That is what this thread is about.

The OP wants a dedicated IP address for their domain, not for the server.

The only need of Dedicated IP is for Ecommerce websites. There are no SEO benefits of having a Dedicated IP. The geographic location of server and IP is most important in this case. If you wish to rank well in google UK then hosting account with UK based IP is must and the same applies to US based IP for results in google.com.

It is mostly use for SSL Certificates or on e-commerce related websites.

in that case, please highlight the benefit of getting an IP that no one else on the server is sharing with you as opposed to getting one that others are?
