I currently have an Aluminum reseller account with HostGator. I only use my reseller account for building websites and running my own small personal websites.

I was looking into the possibility of using XCache with vBulletin for Akashic Archives, which will be built using WordPress and vBulletin. In the future, I do expect to have to move this site to a VPS when it grows big enough.

I asked HostGator if they have XCache installed.

Here's the transcript:

(11:15:19 AM) *********: has entered the chat.
(11:15:22 AM) *********: Hello, welcome to Hostgator Live Chat.
(11:15:23 AM) *********: How may I assist you today?
(11:15:26 AM) Gemma: Hi, I have a reseller account with you guys, and I would like to know if you have XCache installed? If not then can it be installed by you or is there an alternative available which can be used with vBulletin?
(11:16:19 AM) *********: It can only be installed on a dedicated server.
(11:16:40 AM) Gemma: I see, so is there an alternative available already installed?
(11:17:37 AM) *********: Not that I know of.
(11:17:55 AM) Gemma: Okay, thanks. That's all I needed to know. Bye.
(11:18:38 AM) *********: You're welcome!
(11:18:38 AM) *********: Okay, take care and have a great day!
(11:18:38 AM) *********: Thank you for using HostGator Live Chat. If you could take a minute to rate your experience with HostGator as well as my overall performance, that would help us to improve our customer service. To do that, just click the button that says Rate and Exit in the upper right hand corner. The survey takes less than a minute to fill out.
(11:18:42 AM) Gemma: Closed this chat intentionally
(11:18:51 AM) *********: okIt's a PITA because I'd rather set up something such as XCache or MemCache, eAccelerator, etc at the start, so that I don't end up having to do it down the line.

I'm not upgrading to a dedicated server.

So do you guys know of any good hosts who sell reseller space at a reasonable price (approx $40 USD per month) who has:

XCache or similar installed, or who offers the option to have it installed;

the option to have SSH access enabled for every account within my reseller account;

excellent customer support;

the option to upgrade an account within my reseller account to a VPS.

I doubt any have xcache installed, you're better off getting a VPS. SSH for every account under your reseller is a potential security risk.

I don't mean that SSH has to be automatically enabled for every account within my reseller account. What I was trying to say was that I'd like the option there to request it to be enabled. So if mySiteA (Akashic Archives) needs SSH, but mySiteB (360 Source) doesn't require it (both sites are not my main site which is NetcomStudios) then I'd like to be able to have the host enable SSH for mySiteA. HostGator charges for this on a monthly basis, according to their tech.

And I know full well that even when on a shared server with certain hosts, they'll install XCache or similar if you ask. *******ed is a good example. But AFAIK *******ed doesn't offer reseller space. The new host doesn't have to have it installed out of the box but I'd like the option to have it installed if it's required.

If VPS is really the best way to go, or even a dedicated then would I be able to operate it as if it was a reseller box?

You would even be able to set up your own resellers with a vps or dedicated, not to mention all the freedom you want.

Hmmm okay but I'd need a managed one until I learn how to manage a VPS or dedicated server. And I'm guessing $40 USD a month isn't going to cut it...

Any suggestions for a VPS? A managed one if possible would be better.

Should not be hard to find a host with MemCache compiled in with php.
