Help with backing up data to test upgrade

I have installed a test copy of vbulletin, so that I can test the upgrade to 3.8. Since my database is fairly large, is there a way I can pull a subset of data out and use that for my upgrade, or is the best bet to create an exact replica and then test the upgrade?

There is no way to pull out just some of the data. You would have to make a backup of the complete database, restore that to a new db, then use that for the test forum.
