View Full Version : What good are social groups?

What am I missing here? The implementation of "social groups" in vB 3.7.x seems utterly useless to me. The use of such groups is anything but self-explanatory to members. A "group" essentially seems to be one long thread.

Who cares?

Seriously, who's using this? And on whose site has it been greeted with anything but a huge yawn?

It's marginally better in 3.8 since you can have threads within groups, but honestly, it seems to be a waste of time.

Nobody seems to go near social groups at all on any fdorum I've been on. Partly this is ebcause the new posts don't show up anywhere so nobody gets to find out a post has been made in them.

The entire implementation is deeply flwed. I am cxontemplating turning them off on my site as nobody EVER goes near them, despite my best efforts to the contrary.

I tried them and then turned them off. Nobody complained.

The same can be said of the blogging "feature." New blog posts don't show up in "recent posts," and the blog component therefore becomes a forgotten dumpster of trash that no one ever revisits. Seems utterly pathetic.

New posts will appear on the "new posts" or "today's posts" pages to group members. They are excellent as many members have opened up various types of groups..a good way for members to keep out unwanted members..or to have a specific topic...like movie reviews etc.

Not sure about the social groups, at my place people do open up in them.

Blogging depends on the blogger: many blogs on my place are frequented, and are the basis for discussions on the forums. They could do with some more features to enhance pple finding them though.
