View Full Version : Jack-O-Lantern On/Off Gifs?

Since Halloween is coming up (this is a particularly bizarre American holiday!), I'd like to create a Halloween style set for my Board.

Does anyone know where I could find a decent set of Jack-O-Lantern gifs that could be used as On/Off icons? I've searched everywhere with no luck. It would be great if the On icon could be animated and show the glowing flicker of light inside the Jack-O-Lantern.

P.S. For all non-Americans, a Jack-O-Lantern is a pumpkin carved into sometimes grotesque faces.

You should really start using Altavista.com: ;)
http://www.altavista.com/cgi-bin/query?q=jack+lantern&search=Search&imgset=1&stype=simage&pg=q&ipht=1&igrph=1&iclr=1&mmW=1&micat=value%3D%220%22

This is a good one I found while scanning the first few pages:
http://www.viewimages.com/viewimage/?imageid=82024&promotionid=1&partnerid=2&type=results

Oooh, here's a good one:
http://heartofsanantonio.com/raoulspartypics/halloween98/index.html
Even animated. :D

Take a look here as well:
http://www.bluemountain.com/cdb/HDY/H/
You will most likely find exactly what you want there, there are also Flash cards, so they can be animated.

Thanks FireFly. I should have mentioned I was able to find plenty of Jack-O-Lanterns, but none of them were suitable as On/Off icons. Generally I want something no larger than 20x20 and when I try to resize these larger images, they just don't look right.

I'll continue looking through your examples to see if I can find anything that works.

Never mind! I just found a great icon on one of the pages you supplied. It's not animated, but I may be able to make it work. Thanks again!

I put these up a week or so ago, and they work nicely on my board...

You're freely welcome to use them (and you don't even have to thank anyone) ;)

The jack-o-lanterns come in black background, white background and transparent :) Here is a picture if you dont get what i mean

The zip file attatched includes the black, white and transparent set of on and off images. Happy downloading everyone.

I use PhotoImpact 6.0 (can't afford PhotoShop!) I believe the font I used on that logo was Vogel.

I might use these as well. I don't usually give public thanks when someone makes something freely available but I do give recognition where it is due and put a link where necessary.

Anyway thanks.

Hey wluke. I noticed proposalkit sponsors one of the sections at sitepoint. Did they contact you, or did you contact them? I have had the pleasure of being able to use their software. I must say its truly amazing!!

I have a contest at my website to win a free copy of it. More details can be found at my website if anyone is interested..

Oh I would like to add that Halloween is not an American Holiday. It was brought over here by Irish Immigrants who have been carving Jack-O-Lanterns since the 1500's, only they used Turnips instead of Pumpkins. Before Christianity, Halloween was considered the New Year by many of the folk religions throughout Europe and was commonly referred to by its gaelic name of Samhain (pronounced SOWEN).

Christianity even celebrates a ALL-Saints day on November 1st as a kind of homage to this holiday. This is because Christianity had to assume the 8 Pagan festivals to win over the common people of feudal Europe.

In Mexico it there are festivals and dancing to honor the families ancestors. People still celebrate the holiday in Europe and other countries as well. No one still celebrates it in as lavish a fashion as the United States but it is still celebrated elsewhere.

Those look great Sinecure!

For those looking for a cheaper alternative to Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro 7.02 can be had anywhere from $60-$100 I've seen. Its what I've been using...made my forum buttons with it (they arent perfect mind you....I noted that they are rounded buttons in a square matting..so I did what I could to match color so the "box" wasnt too apparent).

Its pretty flexible, takes plug ins like Eye Candy 4000...I've had fun making tags for my site's members as well

Yeah, I know its pretty similar to Photoshop, and Linux definatly needs a good graphics proggy. A lot of people have switched over to that in order to boycott adobe.

There is a version for Windows as well.. I downloaded, installed it, tried to use it to modify the vBulletin graphics, uninstalled it and deleted it.

It has a pretty pathetic interface. At least for a Windows Application. It looks like the whole thing was written in Java which is also a drawback in my opinion. It was slow and unresponsive and poorly implemented layer controls and other features.

However, I have to agree with Paint Shop Pro. It is well worth the money and in my book a much better value than Photoshop.

I downloaded and installed it on windows, and came to the exact same conclusions about its interface, and also unistalled and deleted it.

Paint Shop Pro is excellent value for money, and I also use it, it's a lot easier to get some simple things done with it. However its biggest drawback is .... - it isn't Photoshop.

its not Photoshop...but in essence it does alot of what is needed for most average users / admins....it does suffer a bit for high end desires.

The one thing I find completely frustrating was Photoimpact. It had this great animated text area etc....which is fine and dandy..but if you apply it to a static piece...and save it...it wont save it as an animation...it saves only the *text* as animation...

I ended up getting fed up...so I'd make the base art..then pull it into a gif animator like Ulead or such..and do it there..but what stinks is Ulead is limited in its text animation stock whereas the stuff in Photoimpact looked nice....ah well
