Hi,

I want to upgrade and move servers at the same time. I have never done an upgrade before from 2 different versions so it is new to me. I have read the upgrade instructions but there are still things I have a problem with.

1: When moving 2 a new server, without doing any upgrade or changes what so ever... I know there are still things I would need to change to make it work. What files do I need to change (for exp: htaccess, or point to new server location).

2: When upgrading, im sure that most of my mods will not work with the new version or at least I would need to upgrade those mods to be compatible. I also know they are not supported by VB. Because of this I would probably need to make a clean install of VBulletin and then add all the mods I would need later. On the other hand If I remove all the mods and do a clean install I would still not be able to just keep the clean database because i will have data of mods I used. How do I check for the original VB database files and the ones from the mods.Foe example, I knwo I have in the VB database iTrader records and other things. Is there a list of original VB database that should be so I know what to back up? Also what is the best way to back up?

I will appreciate any information that will get me a better and error prof upgrade.

Thank You!

To make VB work all you would need to do is edit config.php with the new database information on the new server. The .htaccess I am not sure about as everyone seems to have their own.

Admincp > maintinance > suspect file version should give you a general list of all the files that are not vbulletin.

to see what the database structure looks like, create a testvb environment and compare the tables in a fresh install to the current database. That should give you a look and be able to compare the two structures.

How do I handle the styles then? I would have to change it to a style compatible with 3.8....

Also, I head something about Impex. Will I need to use that and where do I get it?

No, you won't, and should not.

You'll need to make a new style, buy a new style, or be willing to use the default.

Impex if for "importing" your database, usually from one brand of forum software into vBulletin, although, under certain circumstances, it may be used in vBulletin to vBulletin, but your issue is a simple upgrade, which involves the uploading of the new version files in the "upload" folder to your server and running the "upgrade" script, as described in the instructions available on this website.

You may have some issues if you are using a custom style in going from 3.6.7 to 3.8.0 and you should check with whoever made your style about whether or not they have made upgrades to make it fully compatible with 3.8.0 yet.

Remember that 3.8.0 is still NOT a stable release and is NOT currently recommended for production Forums, unless you are prepared to deal with potential problems.

You might be better off waiting until it goes "gold," meaning it is considered stable and a fully supported released version.

Again, check with your style supplier as to whether or not their style is compativle with the newer version.

Regards,
