I would really love to see private messaging more like an AIM format... at least as an option of some kind. There's a forum called Zero Forum ( http://www.zeroforum.com ) that work a lot like that. The messages are also stored, but only over a period of time I believe.
I know technically you could just get on AIM, but I still think it would be a neat way to talk to one another through the board.

that would be hard without running some sort of live chat / IM server app on your web server....
vb doesn't really work that way. the best that could be done using existing features would be to have a separate PM window that refreshes every 10 seconds or something. this would then use the built in pop-up windows that vb has for PM alerts. anything else would require a server side chat service of some kind. and most virtual hosts don't allow these kinds of proggies.
...i think

That seems a little off to me...they're claiming that their site loaded with 200,000 messages performed 36 times faster than a vB with 80,000 messages? There's something wrong there...

Those benchmarks have been discussed before.
The Zeroforum benchmarks are local to the utility measuring the speed. The others are not. They are not balanced.

All I know is Zero Forum is asking $699/year for their software!!! Even if they were 36x faster, they're 36x the price :)
Could you take a look at the PM system they use though. It's a really nifty way for people to communicate quickly.

looks like an OpenCrap alternative to me. Hosted only? ~ble~

I think they basically want control over everything so the software can't be distributed. They will allow someone to lease the software, but that costs $699/year!!! At least that's the quote I got when I emailed them.

I've talked with the owners of corvetteforum.com and they said that the machine load is now under 0.5 with zeroforum. It used to get to 80+ with UBB and VB. I have seen 400+ active users on the site before

Assuming corvetteforum.com is using the *hosted* service of zeroforum.com, that would make perfect sense.

No they use their own server. They have a remote license or something.

Yeah, I think Zero Forum is great software. I tried to get it, but it was way too much for me to afford.
I went with VBulletin and I've been super happy for the money.
