I've been researching threads but didn't find any that dealt with this specific question -

Over the years we've upgraded vBulletin, hacked it, modded it, etc, etc. We're looking to upgrade to the newest version but want to do a clean install. We're also going to move to another server which will be the best platform for a clean install.

We will have access to and use of the old server during and after the migration as a backout plan should anything fail.

What needs to be migrated to make for as clean an install as possible?

Can I simply install the clean/new version and then "import" the old user and post data?

There is no clean or supported way to do that.

One *unsupported* way you can try is to install a new copy of vB to a new database, then use Impex to import the old data to the new one. Please read the online Impex import instructions here:

http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex

Also please view the 'After the Import' instructions here:

http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/impex_cleanup

Note: This will change all your existing user, post, thread and forum ID numbers. So all posted links will no longer work, as well as search engine results from prior to this import.
