It definately doesn't work with php 4.0RC1, attempting to run it on this version of PHP results in numerous problems, and eventually corrupt databases.

While trying to run vBulletin on 4.0RC1, it constantly messed up, gave errors, and would eventually crash and burn, despite numerous re-installations.

Once my service provider moved me to a server with 4.0.6 everything was fine, even tho he is still running mySQL 3.22 (I think thats the number) and not mySQL 3.23

I think some testing should be done to isolate what the minimal version of php is needed to run vbulletin, and make that a requirement of installation. It would save people a lot of headaches and grief later on. :)

That's interesting. There are people running it successfully on PHP3.

Maybe some older version, but definately not 2.0.3

Do a search of the forums for zend hash errors, you'll a lot of posts from people with that problem, and once they upgrade their version of PHP, its gone.

Also, when I installed 2.0.3 one of the things it looked for was if the person at least had php 4.0RC1 as a minimum. Even the description mentions that you need at least that to run 2.0.3.

Maybe your thinking about vBulletin lite.

Those are errors related to the Zend products. Your hosting company was wrong to use a Release Candidate version of PHP in a production environment.

vBulletin 2.0.3 has been tested and works on versions of PHP 3.0.9 and up. We cannot garauntee that it will work on either Release Candidates or Daily CVS snapshots as those should be considered Beta Level software.

Well, I'll take your word for it. :)

Maybe the fact that VB won't run on your server is a good enough proof that the version of PHP you are using isn't stable? Get you host to upgrade it!

He did upgrade, and now it works.

But it flat out would NOT work with PHP 4.0RC1

With PHP 4.0RC1 it would work for a while, then the database would get corrupt. My host provider says the only thing he upgraded was the php.

It sounds like the version of Zend was incompatible with the version of PHP, which is perfectly reasonable as the version of PHP was a release candidate.

There are people succesfully running vB today on versions well below 4.0rc1.

Well

It might work with versions below 4.0RC1, and versions above 4.0RC1, but it definately doesn't work with 4.0RC1.

So there...

Well, as mentioned above, Release Candidates aren't supposed to be run in working environments. E.G. vBulletin also stated that the betas and RC's shouldn't be run in working environments. No one will guarantee that software will run on RC's.
