View Full Version : Need to Confine Registration to Specific Universities and their Students (.edu)

My first post, my first bulletin board, and well, i need some help!!

I am hosting a forum that is to be used by members of our organization. These members are Universities that have purchased access to our group. However, the catch is, once a University is registered, we would like to let ANY person affiliated with the University (anyone that can register with a ".edu" email address) to register as a new user.

To clarify, i would like to construct a list that has the member institutions, and then let those that are from those institutions become new members. So for example, if Stanford is on my list, all those that attempt to become users and register with a @stanford.edu email address will be admitted. Those that try using gmail, or yahoo, would be rejected.

Is there any way to do this aside from taking the long route of implementing moderator approval and increasing my workload?

Thank you in advance for any help anyone may be able to provide...

Without modifications it is not possible by default, if you do want some level of automation, finding someone to code you a white list to do the opisite of the banned email list shouldn't be too hard.

Within the Admin CP, there is the option to "ban email addresses"

A simple solution to this problem would be to reverse the code for this mechanism so that it doesn't ban, but allows.

Therefore, i could put for instance "stanford.edu" in the "ban email addresses" box and instead of banning it, it would ONLY allow "stanford.edu" addresses to register.

Is there a way to reverse the code, and if so, what files do I need to edit???

Please don't post this same question on multiple threads. Thank you.
