Hello everyone ,
Im really not sure if I have enough moderators, or too many, and was wondering .
Currently All Moderators are Global... There are 7 moderators, however not all are active.
Just wondering if anyone allocates a certain number of mods per active users/posts etc?
I also dont want to over moderate my community, but at the same time I wonder if some members may like more moderation...
wondering about everyones thoughts as to how many mods would be a good number...
many thanks :)

Demote the ones that aren't active. I think 2 or 3 mods as well as yourself should be enough.

It really depends on your forums and what you need them to do. We have 14 total admins/super mods for 80k users. I have specific things for them to do and that is plenty of mods for us at the moment.

Seeing how hard it is these days to find good moderators that can be active on a daily basis .. I rather have 2 good super mods, than 15 inactive normal mods. Even on a busy site.
These days people can make their own sites left and right, and are part of the content of the site due to web 2.0. As a result they don't feel special enough or involved enough in a community to actually want to work on the site.

We have:
2 Admins
2 Global Mods (we call them Veteran Mods) - all boards
2 Mods - Designated to certain boards/categories

I have about 19 fairly active mods on my site. I guess it depends how many posts per day you do that should determine the number of mods you have.

I have 3 admins.
There's me, who does all the technical stuff as well as oversees website operations. I'm also the website owner.
Then I have my Graphic Designer who is also my Head Moderator. She does all of our custom graphics as well as directs our Moderators.
Then, there is my co-webmistress. She handles all Member Related issues such as Name Changes and Account Modifications.
I also have 3 Moderators. They are all Super Mods, and have their own individual assignments accross the site.

My site has 1 administrator and 5 super-moderators of which 2 are not very active at the moment. But one of the less active super-moderators actually manages the server.
That is for a website with around 80.000 posts, 120 new posts per day and 6000 members, 40 new members per day.

I went from normal forum moderators to both category mods and forum mods where a category mod is a boss to the mods in the forums of a specific category, just thought it will improve the performance and re-distribute responsibilites in a good way ... but no luck yet. :p

How did your plan work out today with the two levels of moderators? Do the category moderators now take care of the moderators? Or do you still have to manage them?

It was one of my worst ideas of forums. It made alot of troubles & confuses plus it didn't achieve the point.

One admin..(Me)
One super mod
Two regular mods
Two support team mods
Like 200 active members...this seems to be working perfect and I plan to keep it that way for a while ;)

That is 1 moderator for 25 active users, for me the team would be big enough to handle more users. Hope your forum grows steadily :)

I have four Super Moderators (I don't do forum-specific moderators). I had five but one just resigned for personal reasons.
All are active and check in several times per day. Two are much more prominent and handle most of the work, but the other two keep a nice balance - they usually come into play when the two highly-active moderators aren't around as much.
As for stats, we only have 861 members and get a couple-hundred posts per day.

I have just installed 2 new mods. I now have (on quite a small board of a bit less than 40k posts):
2 Administrators (one newly promoted)
1 Global Mod (newly promoted)
3 Section Mod's (two newly promoted)
I think that will be the limit, for some time!

1 Admin (me)
1 not so very active mod
11.000 members / 160.000 posts
In earlier days I had 4 mods but sometimes it's more effort to handle these people than all members.
