View Full Version : vB and Oracle?

Greetings.

I'm curious if vBulletin is currently compatible with Oracle 9i Database and/or Oracle 11i Application Server. I know, I know... The system requirements specify MySQL. :p

If not, are there any plans to allow compatibility with Oracle?

Consider this my official suggestion. :)

Maybe a little background would help...

I'm a member of a large - no, make that gigantic - online gaming community centered around Sierra's TRIBES franchise: TribalWar (http://www.tribalwar.com). We love our vB forums and have well over 1 million posts by more than 11,000 members in almost 2 years. There's a problem though. Anytime a member attempts to use the vB Search feature, the forums slow to a crawl (or crash) and make life miserable. Therefore - no Search feature. :(

I've spoken with the admins (who have posted here asking for help - to no avail) and they are in agreement that the problem lies somewhere in the MySQL programming. In other words, its not something simple like hardware.

Now, I have the capacity to install and configure an Oracle Database and applicable Application Server software, but it would be a wasted effort if the forums didn't work in it. Perhaps the compatibility is already there - that's why I'm here. And if its not, maybe it should be. Personally, I'm confident that Oracle would solve our problem.

Thanks.

I believe some people have written a Oracle compatible $DB_site class.

However, from memory they also charged for this.

It isnt that easy, because you would need to go through each SQL clause to make sure its correct(for oracle).

But it exists.

Interesting. I know we have at least one other board with over a million posts that allows searching and seems to run quite smoothly. How are the server(s) setup?

Anyway, there is no official Oracle version right now. There may be in the future but right now there are no concrete plans for one.

And I'm 100% sure I've seen a board with at least 1.4, but don't have the URL anymore. :/

Might want to look at http://www.mysql.com/doc/L/i/Linux.html and implement some of the suggested tweaks for mysql on Linux... squeeze a little more out of mysql :D

.. I'm dissapointed that this software can't handle my volume.

Am I just screwed here? My forums are large so I can't ever search them?

...

:(:(

Without knowing how your server(s) is (are) setup, whether you've edited the mysql variables, etc. etc. etc. there's not much we can tell you. Try posting your server(s) configuration(s) in the Server forum here and see if anyone can help you tweak the performance.
