Hi. I'm asking this on behalf of another forum that I frequent and I'm trying to persuade them to switch to vB.

Problem is, apparently they don't have direct access to the database and don't want to lose their posts.

Is this an issue or is there an easy solution?
Thanks in advance. :)

There is no official solution and if they do not have access to the database then I don't see much chance or developing a usable importer for them.

Oh bugger. That's a shame.
Okay. Thanks for the swift response. :)

Get your forum admin to ask Zetaboards if they can have/buy their database as they want to move to their own server.

That's a good thought, thanks.
Do you know if they've done that for anyone before? I did search but couldn't find anything.

They do offer such service; but its quite expensive:

Yikes, yeah, they have ~200,000 posts, I think.

Thanks for the link though, I didn't come across that whilst searching.

A ridiculous price, but most of these hosted forums don't offer this at any price.

I agree. The problem with free forum hosts is that they own your database and at anytime they can yank it, take it for their own property or just delete it all together and all of the posts are distant memories.

I would never and have never hosted a forum on a free service. It is too risky. I started out using PhpBB & then gradually made the move over to vBulletin.

Personally, I don't like these services as they hold your data hostage.
If I were ever on one of them, I'd move away from them as soon as I can, so the fees I have to surrender for them to release my data from hostage doesn't raise to a ridiculous unaffordable amount.

I used to use a free forum site, but I learned better. No real customization, and getting people to sign up...is like Andy Huang without Anime. It's never going to happen.

That is a ridiculous price for something which would take 10 minutes of their time to send you the sql file.
