How to display forum categories in seperate tables

I saw on some forums, on the main page, each forum category is displayed in it's own table (attached image below) rather than all jumbled together.

I haven't found this option in Vb options - is this some kind of hack? Or are people editing templates somewhere?

It's a template hack. You'll find it on vbulletin.org > Mods tab > template modifications.

I wonder if there is a way to display a banner ad after every 2 forum categories or something... Im sure a simple <if state could do that?

Sorry, there is no function to do this. This requires modifying the code. We cannot officially support code modifications or forums running modified code, however you can try searching or asking for help with this over at www.vbulletin.org.
