Hey sorry to have to ask like this, lol. I was wondering who you used as your web host. And do you do it by colocation, or by dedicated servers? I ask this because I am trying to find a good web host for colocating my server with.

Thanks for your time,
Apollyon

well i'm renting a dedicated server from www.venturesonline.com - plan 4 dedicated + 256mb extra ram -> http://www.venturesonline.com/Dedicated_Servers/dedicated_servers.html

They're redesigning their site with additional plans/packages so keep an eye on that :)

I know Chris S my fellow mysql/server config mod has a dell poweredge 1550 1U dedicated server colocated with venturesonline.com as well - just moved he did to VO :)

also Martin our vB install forum mod has a VO rented dedicated server as well.. see a trend lol

VO has awesome tech and after sales support and great connectivity with a suite in Verio.com's denver datacenter :D

just to note, VO is moving all their servers to a larger suite within the denver datacenter these coming days/weeks since they need more room for the servers hehe

I saw that VO charges a whole lot for their colocation compared to my host

mine charges $99 a month for a 4U colocation and $50 gig a month

apollyon
Sun 9th Sep '01, 4:30pm
and for about the same service (actaully less features) VO cahrges around $400 a month

had to wait a year or so before the domain was back on the market for me...

cihost has done me ok, and plus their bandwidth is approaching 650 mps, and it is privately owned

i agree i have had my share of problems with them, but no one has been able to beat their proce to feature ratio

go to www.webhostingtalk.com and do a search on their vB for cihost and see what ex-clients have to say about one of the worse hosts ever!

even people who had no problems with cihost while they were with them ended up having problems when you try to leave them - either billing or dns/domain wise

Also with cihost you need

* Requires 12 month commitment (startup + first month pre-pay)
* If you desire a 3 month committment add 10% to monthly costs so you're tied in with them

i agree that they have problems, but you cannot beat their price.

the only place i have ever found that had a better price for bandwith of dedicated server is rackshack, but i hate linux/unix servers. I am trying right now to convince rack shack to host my server for me, im tryin to get them to colocate

here is the specs on my server im building:

4u aluminum rackmount case
ASUS CUV4X-D Dual Processor Mainboard
dual Intel PENTIUM® III 1Ghz FCPGA, Flip Chip, 256K Cache each
3 sticks of Kingston 512MB 64x72 PC133 ECC CL3 Non-Parity
Unbuffered 3.3V SDRAM. total ram = 1.5 gig
(1) SEAGATE CHEETAH 18.3GB 15,000RPM ULTRA-160 SCSI
(2) IBM EIDE 75.0GB Ultra ATA/100 3.5 in. LP HD 2MB Cache 7200RPM
total hd space = 168.3 gig
Adaptec 29160N LVD 160/M SCSI Controller card
Savage4 AGP Video Card w/32MB DRAM memory
Creative Lab Sound Blaster Live Value
Modem: N/A yet
Network Card: N/A yet
OS: Win2k corp server
Web Server: IIS

i need extremely high bandwidth for my sites, but i dont wanna pay out the ass for something that i can get for cheap elsewhere.

rackshack.net can give me 300 gigs for $99 a month, but i dont know if they will allow me to colocate.

so far cihost is the cheapest colocation place i have found, and they only offer a base of 50 gig per month, and i know that will not be enough

eva2000
Sun 9th Sep '01, 4:49pm
price ain't everything ... especially when you need the support and reliability for your sites... Trust is another issue..

Being locked in for 12 months with cihost doesn't appeal either... i remember when Interland's (another ex host how has merged with Hostpro.com) sales tactic was to try and lock people into 12 - 24 month contracts..

* Requires 12 month commitment (startup + first month pre-pay)
* If you desire a 3 month committment add 10% to monthly costsa good reliable host won't force people into length contractual committments ;)

as to server building i have no clue :o

i have looked into colocation for the future, and server vendors i looked into

www.racksaver.com - who VO buys servers from

www.penguincomputing.com - another one alot of web hosts use

www.qsol.com - one i recently found.. nice configurations in the 1U area but higher the configurations get limited

www.online-spectrum.com - found them the other day not sure pretty cheap prices but power supplies seem low @180 - 200W compared to others at 250 - 300W

whoops forgot www.dell.com for servers hehe

that is the server im gonna put together, will only cost $1770 as it is configured right now

hopefully i can find a good colocation web host, one that will not charge me out the ass for features i dont care about

ill probably do more searching, in light of the massively bad comments towards cihost i have heard here, but i have been using them for 1 yr and so far they have only pissed me off half of the time, lol

i know rackshack does not provide colocation, but i sent emails to their high ups like the vp of tech support and customer service seeing if we could arrange a deal of sorts

for colocation other than at VO.. i have kept my eyes on

www.dtwebworks.com + www.affordablecolo.com
www.pwebtech.com - had under staffing problems before
www.weinbar.com - had under staffing problems before
www.tera-byte.com i had a raq3 with their www.4webspace.com site but cancelled to cosolidate my sites at VO
www.efreeservers.com

hey m8, thx for the site i already found one that im gonna try out as soon as i get my monster web server setup (im gonne love the dual 1ghz and 1.5 gig ram, muhahahah)

the e.freeservers has a package for 200gig for 199, and that is the best deal yes, unless rackshack will let me colocate

hey im gonna show that deal to cihost, cus the gaurantee that they can be any price by 10% or they will give you $1000, so ill either get it for $180 a month from cihost, or ill get $1000 from cihost! hell yah, im fixin to email them right now!

apollyon
Sun 9th Sep '01, 5:24pm
here is the email i just sent cihost. He he i bet they hate me by now. But i want my damn $1000 that they say they will give me if they cannot beat a competitors price

And this time dont take the page down the same day, and tell me that you dont offer it any more like you did with the RAQ servers.

my domain is www.darkdimensionsonline.com, and my cihost customer id is ci77438301

I have a claim regarding this add "We will beat any competitors prices on comparable hosting services by 10%. If we can't we will pay you $1000!"

I found a competitor that you will find hard to beat.

Here is the deal
company : http://colocation.efreeservers.com/
deal:
200GB for $199.00 a month, no setup fee
FREE Set-Up & Configuration
FREE Rack Space
FREE & Unlimited IPs
No Restrictions On Contents
Initial Configuration: FREE
Manual Reboot: FREE
Secondary Name Server (EFS Networks): FREE

your colocation deal:
50 GB of monthly bandwidth included
127 IPs included
1 dedicated 100Mbps switch port
Free DNS for your machine
One free hour of administration per month
24x7 network operations center monitoring and reboot
Physical access control
24x7 security guard
Startup: $200.00
Monthly: $99.00
Additional bandwidth: $10.00/GB/month

your base package is lacking 150 gigs per month, and your price to upgrade to 200 gigs a month would be a startling $1500 more per month (since you charge a massive $10 per gig a month for extra bandwidth, they only charge $0.70 a month per gig for extra bandwidth!)
plus not to mention the unlimited ips, and the $0 set up fee they offer.
So in the end for you to have the same package you would be charging $1599 a month for the same service they are changing $200 a month for!

I would prefer that you beat the price by 10% (but the offer does still not compare, since it is lacking so much of the features), but if you cant I will also gladly take the $1000.

im gonna go with efreeservers.com unless my web host beats their price, like they say they will, other wise ill get $1000 from my current host. Also if rackshack agrees to colocate my server, then ill go with them, cus they offer the mocst bandwidth for the best price
