View Full Version : Suggestion for Paying customers

We have this great new feature that lets mods and admins know if someone is a member by having them enter their info into their cp.

But, alot of us are giving out help before a mod can ask them to enter it, and therefore still contributing to pirated boards by accident.

My suggestion is to add a function so that in the profile there is a section listed as something like, "Has entered customer id", and says yes or no. This way we dont see any of their info, but we know if someone has entered this or not.

Anything along the lines of this would be great!

this anti-piracy **** is getting really ridiculous...
let mods and admins get over the licence bull****... but what you have to do with that?? you also want to know the size of my shoes or the height of my girlfriend???
you're not god, so leave this to the mods and admins please...

xshredx, Wow, that's a very bitter post..

What is wrong with users of a product trying to take the initiative to help out the moderators, admins and creators stamp out what could drive up the prices? I think it's a very good idea and if some choose to help people that don't have a license, then that's their business, but at least it's available.

BTW.. WaJones instituted something like this at PHPPortals, you can see the icon in the members list.

Argh. This thread got off track right at the beginning.

How's this sound: If a user has entered valid license information in their profile, then they can see the license status of other users as well?

c-prompt

Sounds good to me. I just really dont want to go and help someone because I didnt know they hadn't entered there info.

If youre going to allow other members see the status of a valid license have something like -

"License Info Entered" Yes or No.

That would be only for non Admin and mod members. And Admin and Mods could see the actual license info.

Mods and all but two admins can only see that the info is entered, and the license number, but not the password, as it is right now.

In no event would regular members, even with license info entered, be given access to see the actual license number.

we don't want the license number, just to know there is one there.

Any word on if admins are even considering adding something like this? I think it would really stamp out more of the piracy. As of right now this new addition stops mods and admins fromoffering support. But its useless since someone like us will just go and give them the help not knowing whether they are legit or not.

Maybe even something extremely simple like a small icon somewhere to indicate having entered it.

Since the two admins are both away at the moment, no it isn't being considered. All that is left are us Mods and Developers, and we're not prepared to make big changes like that without John and James.

After they return (in the next few days), then I'm sure we'll be able to give it some consideration :)

I for one agree that something needs to be done, and the idea of only showing the information to licensed users is a good one. But all this will have to wait for at least another week or two.

Maybe even more extremely simple, no customer number entered no entrance to the entire forum board !

Very very bad idea. I think this was stated before but many people admin boards they don't own, and therefore this would definately not work. I really don't feel like getting into details here, but its a bad idea :)

We have thought about limiting access if the person doesn't have a customer number entered, but right now this method is working fairly well.

Personally, being able to come here and read these forums before I bought a vBulletin licence and set it up gave me a lot of information about what it was that I was buying. The level of support I saw here was one of the main factors in persuading me to choose vBulletin.

I'll be using vBulletin for all of my clients too and getting a licence for each one. I think it's very good value for money and the money should be available for ongoing development.

I would kind of agree with xshredx, I agree you wan't to stop piracy... But if you do not help people that are working for others that have a lic#, then your effecting your paying customers. I have a few people to help with our Forum, and I did not give them all my lic# and password, and I do not plan on it.

But from what you guys say, if they need help with a problem, they will not recieve it because I did not give them my Lic#. I feel thats just not right, I am sure there are other ways to deal with piracy, than to hassle people that may be working for someone with a Lic. I have had one that I gave my Lic# to because you guys would not leave him alone, and were getting very rude with him over a silly Lic#.

Simple: People that pay for this board, may not even work on it, they may have others that work on it for them and will need the help..... Think about it... and lighten up on the poor guys.

God Bless,

God Bless,

We're thinking about a solution to this at the moment.

Hoewever, all someone has to do if they work at another board is tell us your username and ask you to confirm that they really do work on your board - we'll happily support them then. A better solution is being considered.

c-prompt
Mon 24th Sep '01, 8:53pm
Well, they could implement something for that as well.

Not only could a person enter their info, but let them supply the usernames of the people that work on their board in their profile. So when they have whatever is implemented for a paying customer, underneath would be listed the 3 usernames or whatever for the other people that can get support via their forum license.

Or something like that.

I was never a user here until I was asked by the webmaster to
help him out. So he would not have been able to give you a username.

But yes a section in the profile for what domain you work for

ex: domain.com

would be a good thing. Then you could just write to admin@domain.com to make sure that they are working for them.

Can you guys tell just by knowing the domain name, is they have a lic#?

Basically I think that if they have the URL of the board, not the site, they can check it with their database, since before you can download vB you must enter the address to the board.

Annette
Fri 28th Sep '01, 6:51pm
Well, why not bring this on to the top, since it addresses something on my mind....

We have two owned licenses, and actually three customer numbers. All of those numbers appear to be related to the same account, though (or, do right now - earlier, one was giving me a different date for renewal, but now all three show the same data). Whom should we contact to figure out what our two individual, valid customer numbers are? The one in my profile is the one from the email dated the most recently according to the items I have stored for vB registration, and allowed me to download the latest and greatest version.

Thanks.

BAD idea because I run 3 vbulletin licenses on INTRANET servers, so they have no 'contact' outside of our own offices.
