User profile field in notices

Is there any way that I can use a user profile field in notices?

In my case I have a field for Real Name and want to use that instead of the username in some notices.

As an update, I am happy to replace one of the other fields that are usable within the notices with the custom field, if that makes it easier.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this would be a better question at vB.org or not, so please let me know if it would be.

But where is it specified what field from the database the other fields are pulled from. e.g. {username} that the notice system uses? I gather that this is in one of the php files which I'm sure I could fiddle with and test out, but I am not sure which file it is.
