Offline use of data

Hello,

I've got a live forum which I want to duplicate offline, so I can create styles. I've got a basic (blank) install of the forums on localhost - but what steps do I need to follow to copy my live data onto my local machine?

If I duplicate my forum for test purposes, won't it still be online? I have turned it of in the setting but will it still send out birthday e-mails and so on?

To clarify.. I wan't a copy of my board with messages, users and son on but I don't wont it to be active
