After doing some testing to make sure I understood this and before I posted this, here is what I found out.
No matter what you do for a usergroup they can only soft delete visitor messages. The admins are the only ones that can hard delete visitor messages.
Is there any way to give a usergroup permissions to hard delete visitor messages in there own profile?

No, its a moderator permission.

I figured it was something like that.
I think that this option should be added though. We should give users a little more control over their visitor messages or at least let the admincp have that option to give them hard delete permissions. I do not want to start purging all the soft deletes that users do in the visitor messages.

I think just hiding it from them would be a better solution.

Your right that is a solution but I run a large VB site and I don't want to have soft deleted messages taking up space in my database. What is the purpose of hiding them? Why not give the option to let them soft delete or hard delete.

Disagreemenets between users, or someone deleting a conversation before reporting it.
you could prune off soft deleted messages every x via a custom cron

I am not referring to users being able to hard delete there post in other people profiles. I can understand where that would not be a good idea.
I am referring to the owner of the profile being able to delete hard delete vistor messages in there own profile.
I can also see where there is a way like you said to run a cron job to get ride of the soft deletes that people do. This is not good because there are some soft deletes that users may want to keep on file and I may want to keep on file. This is why the option to have users being able to soft or hard delete in there profiles would be nice. This was a admin does not have to babysit the soft deletes in user profiles visitor messages.

I couldn't agree more, it's silly to not be able to give the ability to users to manage their own profiles. Anyway, can someone explain how I would run that prune to get rid of the messages?

I have been waiting for that same answer to. I am really hoping that they will add this to their next update. I can not see where they will see this as a problem for large boards.

So you still haven't heard back on how to prune that particular thing? I looked but was not able to find it myself.

No I have not heard anything back. I would have thought VB would have replied as to how to do this or look into incorporation it in a future update. I guess not.
