No Squiggly String Shows for Human Verification

I have the Human Verification Options set to verify at registration. When new users try to register the box with the background image shows but there are no “squiggly” letters or numbers shown. I am not sure when this started happening, but I haven’t gotten any new users in weeks. I have 3.7.1 Patch Level 1. I have not changed the templates at all, or really messed much with any default settings.
Any Ideas?

You need to recompile PHP with Freetype 2 support.

Thanks Wayne. I read the manual page that you linked to. That seems like what I need to do, but I am not sure what to actually do. Can you give me some more information?
