Hi all, so I have PHP BB right now, but I am thinking of switching to v bulletin because I think it appears more user friendly for people viewing it. I have read through the threads that say v bulletin is always a step ahead of phpbb, but what exactly is that step ahead?
Also can you set permissions on your forum so that say for example, people with yahoo emails are placed in a certain group and people with gmail are placed in a certain group, and the yahoo people can only post in a yahoo section and the gmail only in a gmail section. Basically, can you set permissions, and can you have someone automatically put into a permission group upon join?
Are you able to put adsense into your forum on vbulletin?
Oh also, if I am planning on using v bulletin on multiple websites, I see that I need a license for each one. When you pay the nominal 30 dollar update fee each year, do you have to pay 30 per website?

I'm not sure if you can put people in a usergroup based on email.... perhaps with promotions but I think that is either postcount or reputation based. Perhaps with a mod from vbulletin.org

You can have set permissions per usergroup. As for groups, well you can have people manually join a group themselves, or for example after 1 post they are promoted to a group.

Yep, I have adsense and a few other ad networks on my site. With vB 3.7 it even has 'ad locations'.

Yep, you have to pay it for each license you wish to upgrade. Please note they are changing their licensing details (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268714)later this year.
About updates:
License Renewals
For a Leased license, it is necessary to purchase a license Renewal in order to continue to run vBulletin on your site. For Owned licenses, it is not necessary to renew in order to continue using vBulletin, but is required in order to extend access to software updates.
From the June 2nd, the following changes will be coming into effect:
Leased license Renewal pricing will be $100.
Owned license Renewal pricing will be:
$40 if purchased before the license expires or within 60 days after expiry
$60 if purchased at any other time
vBulletin Renewals will now also renew linked add-on products (details below)
If a Renewal is purchased before the license expires, the existing expiry date is extended by one year. If the Renewal is purchased after the license expires, access to software updates is restored, and the expiry date will be set to one year from the date of Renewal purchase.

Well I am not able to post on v bulletin .org because I am not licensed. Does anyone know if it possible to automatically place people in groups according to their email?

That's not a default feature and I dont believe their is an existing mod for it.
There is a mod however which allows you to place users into specific usergroups based on the value of a custom profile field (say location or one you created). I imagine that could be tweaked for your own use but that depends on your php skill level.
