Steve, since I am obviously a technologically challenged dope is it smarter to pay for installation? Is that something I would never be able to figure out on my own?

It's up to you. It doesn't hurt to try the install yourself. You can always purchase it later if you need to.

This board is loaded with people who knew little to nothing and tried and asked and tried again till they understood, including me. If you pay then you've given up without even trying and you'll never learn.
It's not like you're doing brain surgery. There are no serious consequence to a screw up, just back up and try again.

Buddy.. Installation is super easy so don't worry about that..
My friend once installed vBulletin for me.. then i decided to give it a go to install it on a trestboard and somehow it worked.. config.php stuff is so easy my vBulletin was running within 10 minutes!

unless they radicley changed the install since like 2003 it is a breeze and a half just follow directions and click what needs clicking.
if you can install antivirus on your pc you can install vB on your host.
