Groups access to forums

I'm trying to get my head around the groups set up in VBulletin.

I run a site / forum for a TV series, two of our biggest areas are Fan Fiction and Fan Art, but some fans have flagged they do not wish to see these threads and just want to discuss general aspects of the program, they say it detracts from their experience.

Can I set up a public group, that members can join, say 'Fans' and then they will be granted access to the fan fic and fan art areas of the site? So normal users will not see these areas? Would this work?

Yes; and you have the entire concept down exactly correct.

Create a new usergroup, allow the users to join that group on their own (they'd need to venture into the ever so rarely used User CP to do that).
Disable access to the sections you don't want people to have access to by using "Deny All" on the permission editor.
Enable access to the section for the usergroup by editing the group's permission, setting it to what you want... And you're done :)
