I hope this is the right place to post such a thread. I and several other friends are interested in starting a board. None of us are versed in PHP or MySQL. We hpe to find someone who can provide us with a startup board. We'll buy the software and pay someone to get it up and running with a little "training" on the ins and outs.

My questions are what to look for in a host?

What price are we expected to pay for this type of request?

What version of vBulletin should we purchase?

I am sure there will be more questions to come. Thanks in advance.

You may want to browse the hosting forum here on vb.com for choices but you can probably start out on a "shared" hosting plan to start with.

vBulletin 3.7.0 requires at least PHP 4.3.3 and MySQL 4.0.16 (These are the same requirements as vBulletin 3.6), but we strongly recommend that all customers run PHP 5.2.5 with APC and MySQL 5.0.51 or later. Major performance benefits can be had by taking the recommended route rather than simply satisfying the required versions.

Hosting can vary, but an 'owned' license will cost $160 if you buy before June 1st and $180 afterward. Generally speaking, the 'owned' license ends up having the lowest cost of ownership the long run.

You get access to the latest supported versions. I suggest 3.7 which is the latest release with the newest features.

edit to add:

Installing vb and setting it up is pretty easy... you may want to contact sales and request an admin demo to play around with.
