Has anyone heard of a group of forums get together and being part of dedicated hosted forum to help with the cost. It seems dedicated hosted server is best option for even smaller forums due to restrictions of shared servers. Would doing something like this work?
A example of restriction in hostican for shared hosting package is there is a 100 email limit / hour which makes it almost impossible to have a forum on a shared server w/them. Most forums will have at least 100 members. am I missing something.?

Sharing cost would still make it shared, and implicitly have certain restrictions put in place so your forum can coexist with the others on the server. Either get your own VPS or your own server if you want to get rid of limitations.

I was thinking about something similar, it's definitely got legs. The dedicated server could be customised to handle the traffic specifically for vbulletin.
Might be worth us launching a product.

Not if you limit the # that could be a part of the dedicated server. Basically it could be a "costume" dedicated server where 10-12 forums decide to get together and have their own dedicated server. would just need to find 10-12 that would like to participate and then find a hosting service willing to agree to it.
Sounds too simple doesn't it? I know you guys are going to shoot this out of the water. but seems like a good idea. Ok I got my sheild up for the bullets about to come at me:)

Better option would be to have a VPS.
What you suggested is like a semi -dedicated server and most companies(like hostgator) who run such a service stopped it. I understand you are talking about a group of forum owners running it as opposed to a hosting company. Still, it will be difficult to implelemt because of the fact that you will not be able to monitor the resource usage and take action of the members most of whom are going to be big borads and respurce hungry.
It will be difficult to equally share the resources under such a set up. The solution is VPS! 10-30 users sharing a server and having strict limit of resources along with complete control and security for each memeber!
