I am trying to upload from 3.5.4 to 3.7 - I uploaded all the 3.7 files, and tried to enter the upgrade, system, and got this error message

Your vBulletin (3.5.4) does not appear to be running the version that was downloaded (3.7.0).
This generally means your upgrade was not successful. Please ensure that you have uploaded the latest files and click here (http://www.passboards.org/install/upgrade.php) to try again.
If you are sure you wish to continue with this part of the upgrade, click here (http://www.passboards.org/install/finalupgrade.php?step=1).

This is when I was on the very first step of upgrading, right after entering the member number!

Maybe that means none of the 3.7 files actually overwrote the original files you had.
Be sure that they are.

Run this to determine if files have been overwritten and you might see modification files, but those you will know what they are for.
Admin Control Panel > Maintenance > Diagnostics > Suspect File Versions

I can't get admincp to load now. I tried re-uploading all the files, checked and made sure the date showed today, and going back to the upgrade script - it's still giving me the same error - now it says

Your vBulletin version does not appear to match with the version for which this script was created (version 3.5.4+).
Please ensure that you are attempting to run the correct script.
If you are sure this is the script you would like to run, click here (http://www.passboards.org/install/upgrade_360b1.php?step=1).

You did make a backup of this database first, right? If so at this point, click on the 'click here' to continue.

oh yes, I did make a backup :)

I clicked on the 'click here to continue' anyway script, but it seems to freeze on the first step, which is 'large table alterations' -with this url
upgrade_360b1.php?step=1 (http://www.passboards.org/install/upgrade_360b1.php?step=1)

That step may take a while depending on the size of your database.

my database is pretty big - when you say ' a while', how long would that be? i can't get to admincp anymore, but it'sd got about 20,000 - 30,000 members and getting close to 2 million posts..

It's hard to say. It could be an hour or more.
