Ive been a dedicated member of 1&1 UK for years using their shared hosting package, but the 100mb MySQL limit is really limiting my website.

I made the decision that i would upgrade to a Managed Dedicated Server with them, but after a few emails they told me that im allowed 75 databases WITH 100mb limits on each! - even if you get a Managed Dedicated Server there is STILL this 100mb limit. So i cant win there.

They told me the only option is to get a Dedicated Server (Root - not managed) in order to have full administration so i can do whatever i want.

So are 1&1 the only ones who set limits on their managed servers - or is this normal?

I really dont want a root server as i have no clue about servers.

Any recommendations on where i should go - UK based hosts please.

Thanks

Unless you're running a gameserver, a dedicated in the US will be just as fine, and you won't pay VAT either. The thing is though, 1and1 is really cheap because they oversell bandwidth and generally have huge problems with billing people(cancelling especially). What hardware specs are you looking for and how much are you willing to spend?

thanks for your reply,

Ive been satisfied with 1&1's service, but its just the database which is setting me back.

Hardware specs - well i have nothing in mind at the moment. 200 people online at once.

My budget, about £50 a month.

But if i get a dedicated server, i have no clue on how to update software, operating systems etc? Thats why i wanted a managed one - (but 1&1's comes with the 100mb MySQL limit)

The budget is a tad low for a good server, but a VPS should work for you. How much space/bandwidth do you use per month?

I dont know whether a VPS database will be limited?

well im moving upto the 100mb mark on my database, and i have about 2 GB in files. bandwidth - 20GB.

also 1&1 have a limit as to how much connections can be onto a database at once - would this also be for a VPS?

No, but you can set limits if it is slowing you down too much on a VPS. If you keep growing though, in some months you might need to upgrade and pay more for a proper dedicated server.

Database size limits on a dedicated server? This about the most rediculous thing I have heard.

Well let me tell you something, before i make a suggestion of where you can move to.

1 and 1 are the worst you could go with if you are wanting to host big websites or a popular vb. They are expensive and they limit you so much! If you do your research you will see 1 and 1 are not good for bigger websites but rather good for smaller sites.

Now with the limits you are mentioning thats waay out of order, i am with Web Hosting Buzz (http://www.webhostingbuzz.com/) everything such as databases etc are unlimited along with emails etc. The only thing you buy is the space and bandwidth which is great also as they give you plenty.

They have the latest php versions which you can change to your needs and most importantly they have much better prices than 1 and 1 when it comes to dedicated and you are sure to save on a lot! Their speciality is vb hosting and they also host a vb themselves.

Do take a look: Web Hosting Buzz (http://www.webhostingbuzz.com/)

Thanks,

Another idea i had was; is there anyone who sells just MySQL space - i was thinking that i would "point" the vBulletin script to another companies server? is that possable - i think its called remote access?

Can i do this - is there anyone who provides this service.

I got this idea as i saw that someone did smtp.com - who let you send emails from their server (eg mailing lists) if your server has mailing restrictions.

I am afraid that 1and1 are truly awful. My board is not huge, around 700 members and with moderate traffic, and I am on a dedicated server. In four months I have made 10 support calls as the server has either locked or their comms have dropped out. It's pants.

I am moving to these people www.streamline.net, they seem to be quite sensible and reasonable.
