VPS is basicly a server that is dedicated to your website/forum, and not shared with others, but it's in a remote place(not your house) ?
Am I right?...
I can see the advantage of one of those... Probably a lot of money though....hmmmmm

A VPS is on a shared server. As in a small shared server. You are allocated x amount of space, bandwidth, RAM, etc.
It is not dedicated. But it is a closer level to it. You will not be sharing YOUR allocated resources with others, but you'll be sharing the main server resources with others.
Yes, it's hosted in a remote location (datacenter)
Hope I explained it well.

Virtual Private Hosting, or VPS, is an economical way to obtain the functionality of a dedicated server. Through the software installed on the server, accounts are created in complete isolation from one another. Accounts exist on the same server, much like shared hosting, but these accounts allow root access to install programs and applications that would not be available to other accounts. You are able to customize your VPS just like a dedicated server but at a fraction of the cost.

I may go with that option then, because I have many internet friends that are willing to help me "jump start" my community..About 60 people I met from various message boards say they will sign up when I get this thing going. It will be a site and forum dedicated to friendships, loneliness, internet addiction, relationships, depression, and self help.
When I get this thing going, I can't risk it bogging down and people getting annoyed(I'll lose my following) so yeah thanks for all the info guys... I have a better understanding now.
Thank you.

OK, I see that www.knownhost.com (http://www.knownhost.com) seems to be a reliable VPS host according to what is said on this site.. $40 dollars a month for the medium space doesn't seem bad...
This may be the one.. *I hope*
BTW.. sinse all the server maintenance is done by them, VPS is doable for a newbie right?.. Just upload my stuff like usual?
Thanks for the help.. I really do appreaciate the knowledge..

Yes as long as you get whm/plesk, else their vps are selfmanaged

I've always been against the use of a VPS, especially in an environment where dynamic content is hosted (i.e. a message board). I would recommend finding a dependable host who will sort you out on a shared / semi-dedicated server and allows you to grow from there.
Also if you are a beginning, a VPS / SSH access will be of little or no use, especially if you are not comfortable with a command line interface.

Any particular technical reason why or is it purely a preference decision?

Like I say, think of it as a virtual machine. I can install Windows 98 in a Virtual PC on XP, but they are sharing the same hardware resources.

from a technical perspective. too much software to be installed onto a VPS (including the VPS software as well) that kinda defeats the purpose.

Top from a VPS which hosts roughly a dozen websites, majority of them dynamic in nature but with low traffic. Main site (wordpress blogs, static html etc.) with vBulletin forum averages any where from 70-130 users online on the vBulleting forum with a 1800sec cookie timeout
top - 13:38:06 up 27 days, 14:57, 1 user, load average: 0.03, 0.03, 0.00
Tasks: 67 total, 2 running, 65 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 0.0% us, 0.1% sy, 0.0% ni, 99.9% id, 0.0% wa, 0.0% hi, 0.0% si
Mem: 393216k total, 184936k used, 208280k free, 0k buffers
Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached
This was the memory stat when I got the delivery of the VPS, CPanel/WHM, APF installed and running no sites:
Mem: 393216k total, 64584k used, 328632k free, 0k buffers

Just a little clarification here... A VPS, (Virtual Private Server) can be whatever size the provider designates for you, within the confines of the actual physical server it resides on.
VPS's created with VMWare also give you dedicated access to those "root" resources that you are assigned. So in reality it is "Much" closer to a dedicated server, than a shared package, or semi dedicated. The reason being, is that you are not sharing an OS with those other users.
I run a new forum ... www.virtualizationchat.com (http://www.virtualizationchat.com) in which the subject matter is all about virtualization and VPS's etc.

thanks for that, I'm well aware what a VPS is. For a price to performance ratio, I am of the belief that semi-dedicated machines will allow for greater benefits than a VPS because you can allocate greater part of server resources to accounts seeking it. yes the argument will continue that is unfair to the others on the same server and so forth. thats why I mentioned, find a "dependable" host who understands vb hosting and will put you on a machine that can accommodate a distribution of resources across the site.
