impex 3.6.9 to 3.7.0 beta 4

Just a quick impex question. is it possible to impex users from a 3.6.9 forum to a 3.7.0 beta 4 forum and if so how.

If it's very far away I might consider installing 3.6.9, import from phpbb and then upgrade to 3.7. Will that work as well?

When 3.7 goes gold impex will follow a bit later.

You can import into vBulletin 3.6.9 then upgrade to 3.7 RC3, or wait for 3.7.0 to be released and the updated version of ImpEx to follow to import directly into 3.7.0

Can anyone explain then why when the forum was initially set up we were able to impex the 3.6.8 members database to 3.7.1 at the time?
PS-GAB is my current coder.....why i ask this

With Impex 1.88 I successfully imported my old phpbb2 Board into 3.7.0 RC3 for testing purposes without any problems.
