A thread has been made encouraging people to upgrade both PHP and MYSQL.
I have PHP Upgraded, But I guess what Im trying to ask is, is it really that drastic to upgrade my MYSQL?
My MYSQL Version is: 4.1.22
I mean it seems our hosting co. is making a big doggone deal out of it when all you have to do is BACKUP your database.

AS I thought they would say: (there reply)
Generally speaking, if you are using cPanel, and you are keeping it up to date, then you will have no need to "upgrade" beyond where it already is. There are some fairly large differences between version 4 & 5 of MySQL (I'm not sure which you're running - please include your specialized SSH port in the future), but it could cause havoc to touch that, given everything else's reliability on it.
As I said, however, you can be sure that it is upgraded to the latest and most recent/secure version of MySQL already, assuming you are updating cPanel.
Thank You
OK Im not sure if I asked if there were any differences, obviously there is so... but to vBulletin Staff: Do you think it would be a problem if I upgraded my MYSQL from 4.1.22 to 5 ?
IF not, Can i have a tutorial in doing so.

The MySQL docs contains how-to's on upgrading from 4.X to 5.x.
It is suggested that you read through those sections prior to attempting the upgrade and make note of issues you need to pay special attention to.
As always, be sure to make a fresh backup of your database before commencing.
If all else fails you can do an import of that backup after MySQL 5 is installed.

Upgrading MySQL from 4.1.x to 5.x is quite a big deal as there is an upgrade utility that is run against the databases that checks and repairs any table issues.
If you have a big database, or a few databases which altogether are quite big then this will take a while. (Mine is being done at the moment and is 4 hours into the process so far - I expect it to take at least this long again - my databases are over 20GB in total)
Seriously though, unless you are on an unmanaged server or know exactly what you are doing, you should probably ask your host to do this.

cPanel will not automatically update your MySQL version to the 5.x series. You need to set that in WHM. Even though upgrading takes time, I recommend that you do it. The added features, stability and performance make the upgrade process worth it.
If you have access to WHM, you can upgrade your MySQL version there. Look at the WHM/Cpanel documentation for instructions.

It's under Tweak Settings. I did it last weekend. It was quick and painless.
Apache and PHP was another matter entirely. :(

MySQL 5.0.45 is the latest stable release.

Is there a reason to really update to a alpha version or will we really reap the benefits on MySQL 5.0.45?
