I want to add a test board to my server under a password protected directory. What is the proper/legal way to do this?
Would I install vBulletin, fresh with a new MySQL database, with my customer number that I'm using on the public forum, all under a password protected area, or is there another way of doing this?

I don't know why it would need password protection. Just create a folder
with the word test in the path then do a new install. Keep new registrations turned off after you register. Nobody who doesn't know
there is another board with test in the path will ever think to look for one
If by some fluke it was found they couldn't register or post.
If VB looked it up they'd see a board called test with one member, you.

No, it needs to be password protected, as per the license agreement.

It sounds like you're giving me the ok, Zachery, so I'm going to do exactly what I said, but I don't plan to call the directory test. Does that matter?

This is from the License Agreement.
If you have a valid Software license, you may set up an additional test forum in order to test code, template and database modifications. To make this clear to us and our license verification procedures, place it in a directory called 'testvb' and be sure to password protect it. It must not be accessible by the general public.

Is it within the limits of my license to have my test board hosted on a local development laptop seperate from the web? I prefer to not muck up my domain with a whole other installation of vb - costing space and bandwidth for testing.

Yes, the license agreement allows you to set up a test board:
"If you have a valid license, you may set up an additional test forum in order to test code, template and database modifications. To make this clear to us and our license verification procedures, place it in a directory called 'testvb' and be sure to password protect it. It must not be accessible by the general public."

... but I don't plan to call the directory test. Does that matter?
If you don't install it in vbtest, it can flag your license for multiple installations and make it subject to anti-piracy investigations.

Can I get a clarification on "password protected"? Does the folder itself need to be protected somehow, or is the above suggestion of disabling new registrations and then setting vB to not have anything visible in the public acceptable?

The directory must be password protected by htaccess. If it is not then it is a public forum and requires its own license.
