Hello,

My forums currently using Phpbb 2.0.23 and I'm interested to migrate to VBulletin. But I would like to know many things, since I'm not a programmer and my knonwledge about PHP and Mysql is very limited.

My questions:

1. Is it easy to install VB in my hosting account (I only have shared hosting account, not VPS and not Dedicated server either) ?

2. Is the resource under shared hosting capable enough to run VB with no issue ?

3. It is easy to migrate Phpbb 2.0.23 to VB?

The status of my forum:
Posting: 23500 articles
Member: 7700 registered users
Database size: around 60MB (zipped)

Please advice.

Thank you.

If phpBB runs on your hosting account, so will vBulletin.

It's a matter of downloading the .zip, unpacking it, making the config.php file to point to your vb MySQL database, upload the files to your directory, run install.php and you're done.

To import from phpBB too, you can install impex on top of vBulletin and run the phpBB import module.

If your phpBB runs without being a trouble for your shared hosting, vBulletin will run even better. But I expect your site doing better with vBulletin and your traffic might increase when you get more users to visit and register. Over time an upgrade to VPS might be needed when your site grows.

Hi Floris,

Thank you for your fast response.

I would like to know about the migration process.
I read many threads saying migrating Phpbb2 to Phpbb3 it nightmare for large database. The scripts will time out, and other things like that.
So you must use SSH (But since I'm not programmer, using SSH is nightmare for me)

So what do you think about the size of my database?

Is it able to migrate to VB without issue (time out, etc) and it is just need web application (No need SSH) ?

Please advice.

Thank you.

If you have phpBB 2 - why upgrade to phpBB 3 if you go to vBulletin?

vB imports from both phpbb2 and 3., and without any troubles. 60mb is fine. It's a small db.

Actually, at the first time, I think it will be better to migrate to Phpbb3.
My reasons:
1. Still the same Phpbb
2. It is free

But when I try to install and migrate (Phpbb 2 to 3), to many trouble came out.

So I look for another better option. Paid version is okay as long as the software is good and reliable. And easy to install, maintenance and upgrade. With tons of features. :)

It is the time. :)

Again, thank you very much for your fast replies.

Thank you.

If you have problems with upgrading phpBB 2 to 3, contact phpBB support, we obviously can't assist you with that.

Hi,

I think you misunderstand me. :)
I do not intend to ask about Phpbb migration. I just tell you that I have many difficulties to migrate from Phpbb2 to 3. So I decided to look for another option.

I hope this reply clarify. :)
