View Full Version : CPU Usage

Originally I was very pro UBB up until I discovered that there was really no viable solution for ubb admins to turn to when the cpu usage got haywire. My ubb is currently out of commission and buying an entire dedicated server for this program is not possible. I am looking at vBulletin and though I wonder about this code, people say it's faster. Now the big kicker is, is it also a lot less cpu intensive and do people have logs? Thanks!

but I think, due to the nature of the program, it has to be much less CPU intensive.
One of the huge probs with UBB was/is the way postings.cgi operates. When you make a post, it has to write the post to a "cgi" file and an html file. Before it can do that, though, it has to locate the proper "cgi" file, write to it, determine if a new html page is needed, then write it if need be. The process is bloated.
Here, all it does is write it to a single database with the variables in place. The display process is probably more intensive than that of UBB, but I don't think it compares with the probs with postings.cgi and edit.cgi

Hmmm... well forumdisplay.cgi was always a big problem. They said it used more than 30% of the cpu even though I *always* prune the threads. The mere mentioning of thread displaying taking more power scares me.
If however the displaying is significantly FASTER on vbulletin than on ubb then I might consider it. They dont' mind how much it takes as long as the process is less than 3-5 seconds per session.
If you still recommend a moderately sized vbulletin board should still opt for a dedicated server then I am not sure who to turn to...

well I dont have logs to show you, but it definetely frees up the server cpu. Mine wax lagging our dedicated server down a lot with the UBB, now the whole site is much faster, and the other cgi scripts on the site now are freed up.

this is all supposition on my part, though.
I *assume* that because pages are dynamically generated, they will be a little more server intensive than static HTML pages. I've never really paid attention to how much CPU usage forumdisplay takes. The 2 times they cut my board off was because of problems with postings.cgi and people posting to long topics.

All right! Thanks you two. I'm still not sure what to think of this forum on a virtual server but I guess all fingers point to it being a lot less server intensive and faster as a whole.
All in all I want a script I can keep and I'm very hesitant spending another $100+ on something that requires me to break the bank. I'm not cheap, especially since I spent over $300 with a much less than average salary. However asking me to break the bank for a non-profit, just for fun forum is something I can't do. Dedicated is something I cannot do for years.
