It does already in 3.7
Really?
I just got a free API key and entered it into my test-board, and it doesn't seem to trigger. This clearly isn't the place, but I'd like to know what, besides entering the API key, needs to be done for it to take effect so it can be tested.

What exactly are you expecting it to do, and how do you know its not working?

I'm creating posts and threads with apparent spam content.
As far as I understand, those should be catched by Akismet and placed under moderation (or so the vB docs claim ;)).
Am I mistaken?

You're doing this as an administrator user? Why would an administrator's posts be filtered?

Of course not.
It's a regular user, silly.
And the threshold is set at 1 million posts, just to make that clear as well. The default was 0, which means none would be filtered.

Wow -- how rude!

Actually 0 tells the system to scan all of the user's posts.
If a non moderator usergroup has less than this number of posts then all content will be scanned by the Anti-Spam service for possible signs of spam. A value of 0 will scan all posts.
I don't have it enabled on my site but it works on this site. Doesn't catch every spam post but does catch quite a few.

I forgot the ;)
Wasn't intended as rude at all, and I hope Wayne knows that.

Hmm, that's odd.
This setting controls how many of a user's posts will be scanned by the Anti-Spam Service. Once a user's post count exceeds this threshold, his or her posts will not be scanned for spam content.A value of 0 would mean that the user exceeds the minimum even at 1 post, wouldn't it? I agree 0 could either mean off or all, but then the inline help text should be amended.

Sorry for going offtopic: (or so the vB docs claim ;)) which docs are you referring to?

The help-text accompanying the setting. I quoted the on-screen portion above.

I agree, the inline should be changed.
However when opening the help page...
(yoursite.com/forums/admincp/help.php?s=&do=answer&page=options&pageaction=options&option=vb_antispam_posts)
...it says "A value of 0 will scan all posts."

Oh, sorry, your quote threw me off.
Well now I'm curious to know if the akismet integration actually works...

It works on my forum. plus, when you have threads or posts that are spam, inline moderate them as usual, only this time select 'delete as spam', this will push them to akismet and with enough people doing this it will prevent it in the future too.

Hmm, I'm curious as to why it's not working for Fusion...

apparently this is (still) not an automatic function as it implies in the Vb docs.. your mods still have to 'find' the spam (via reports or noticing it) and use the inline mod tools to deal with it.

No, some spam still gets though.

Zachery,
Do you know if my problem could be related to using the free API key?

Just copying and pasting spam content won't trigger it. It works on heuristics based on various parts of your request.
We send through username, post content, browser and IP address to Akismet.
If you want to test if its working use the username "viagra-test-123", this username is always marked as spam by Akismet.

Ar-HAR!
That worked..!
viagra-test-123
was blocked..!!!!!
Nice one!
So....
A question..
Are all "Delete as spam" (and then banned) registrations sent to Akismet to join their database?
Or just "Delete as spam" (and then banned) registrations from forums actually using Akismet?
I have no data protection issues with spammers! (hang the lot of them!) Just curious... :)
Beg your pardon - I missed the 'report spam to anti spam service option' (default is set to "on") great!
