Hi,
I am currently using 3.6.8 Patch 2 and I have changed quite a bit of code for the use of Mods and images for each forum category. So I was wondering seeing as the 3.7 release gets near, will the upgrade of 3.6.8 to 3.7 be easy and will I keep my images and the way the template is set up ?
Thanks
Danny

Yes, an upgrade is quick and easy.
No, the upgrade has a lot of template changes that might require you to revert to the new template and re-apply your customization(s) if it isn't working properly.

I tried to update from 3.6.8 Patch 2 to 3.7 on Friday. My board crashed and has been down ever since.
Don't do it. If something happens and you need help getting back up, you'll be told that this wasn't a supported version and you should have known better.

Sorry to sound rude, but our announcement was pretty clear and despite not knowing how to work backups, config.php files and upgrades you took the risk and upgraded. Yes, if you then have a problem and can't get full support .. that is then quite frustrating.
And our team is still very willing to try and assist you to either revert back to the backup you made or move forward getting your config.php working.

Not sure why you feel the need to tell me that again.
It was made very clear that this wasn't a gold release. I gambled and lost. I realize fully that it was a mistake. I am also aware that the upgrade I tried to install is unsupported. Very, very much aware of that.

Apparently, their is a bug in the cPanel restore program, so the FULL BACKUP I DID RIGHT BEFORE I TRIED TO UPGRADE is corrupted, and therefore useless.
I was only trying to inform the OP that it isn't a slam dunk, and to be aware that it is an usupported version.

Upgrading is very easy. I have upgraded several times with no issues. But as Floris said 3.7.0 are still not gold so you should be prepared for any kind of problems to occur and be prepared to deal with that. And never do the upgrade on a live site without having tested it on a test site first.
Remember to backup database before starting the upgrade. Also remember to test that your backup actually works. A thing many many people forget. They just backup and expect everything is fine until they need to restore. Just as an upgrade can fail so can a backup.

Don't do it. If something happens and you need help getting back up, you'll be told that this wasn't a supported version and you should have known better.There are warnings everywhere telling you exactly this. You have the licensing ability to run a test version on the same server, I suggest you use this capability.
Upgrading VB is usually fairly straightforward. The biggest pain is when templates change, and you have to revert and reedit them. Also, when you throw mods into the mix all bets are off, thought I have had good luck so far with not having any problems with them.

I was preparing to run a test upgrade on my server.
Is there a guide to doing this? I copied the prod home directory to a new test user, dumped the DB over to a new copy. I then browsed to the test forum and when i went to login, it gave me a message about POST permission and adding this domain to the prod server whitelist. I guess my config has hard coded URLs to the prod server.
So... again, is there a guide to doing this?

I ran into the exact same problem with cPanel back last month, but I did manage to get my site backup after a few hours. In the process I did lose, about a whole months posts, but at least my forum is back online, and running under 3.7 RC1. The only way I managed to get the whole lot back online was using SSH, without it, it would have been a dead forum.
All backups I do now, I check after this episode.

PM sent, because if one more user tells me that there are warnings that this might happen, my head will explode.

I thought that one of the reasons a program had a beta version was because it might not work right sometimes?

I do not believe we recommend to use cPanel to make site backups.
Please use our instructions, and I recommend SSH shell access or PHPMyAdmin.

There is no upgrade manual for 3.7, the same as usual applies now.
* backup
* replace 3.x files with 3.7
* run upgrade.php
