I have read that for reCaptcha you need to obtain public and private keys and enter them into the admin cp...is this correct? If so, where on earth do they go?

I'm cracking up then. I can't see anywhere to enter keys on that screen. It allows me to select reCaptcha as the verification system but that's it.

If you select reCAPTCHA (http://recaptcha.net/) and then save, then the bottom portion of that page will have an area to input the keys.

Aha...that's got it...thanks.

Rare for something to evade me like that...I wonder if something ought to be added to to the initial screen, or even the confirmation screen, explaining that the keys go on the following page. If you've a fairly small monitor like mine it looks like you're just back on the same page you starte don.

I've got to say, after testing it I'm not going to use it and have gone back to standard Captcha. The words are mostly unreadable and I couldn't make out even two numbers in any one audio play. If I was registering for my own forum I'd have given up!

Not Jelsoft's fault as I know they don't control it, but if that's typical of how it works I'd caution against using it. It'll put people right off.

exactly... the original capatcha works just fine... you can always customize the original if you have too. And add another registration field if your trying to protect yourself from random attacks.
