What would be the recommended amount of RAM?

You haven't provided much information. Is this the only site on the server? How many posts does it have? How many threads does it have? How many registered users does it have? What is the registrered users vs guests ratio? The answer is based on all of those factors.

0 - 2000 visitors daily : 256ram
2000 - 8000 : 512 ram
9000 - 20000 : 1GB

20,000 visitors would mean around 200,000 page views a day(can vary, i know!). I used to run such a forum(technology) and we had separate db server and a RAM of 4 GB. 1 GB is just tooo low for a high traffic forum. May be something like 8 GB would be ideal!
