Ok, here's the info:

vB 3.6.8
Threads: 14,956, Posts: 540,237, Members: 2,222, Active Members: 382
Typically 80-120 on at one time (20-40 logged in, the rest guests)
150-160 members log in each 24 hour period.

So, let's assume a $100 a month budget, is it better to get:

A low end dedicated server, likely 2.0 ghz celeron, 1024 RAM, single 120gb IDE hard drive, and Plesk or Cpanel control panel

Or

A high end VPS solution, such as one that has 1152 mb SLM guaranteed RAM, and runs on machines like 8 x 2.66 ghz core (dual quad) machines with RAID 10 arrays made up 15,000 RPM SAS-SCSI drives.

So, assuming the same money (roughly speaking), is the low end dedicated or the high end VPS the better solution? I know some of it will come down to how crowded the VPS server is, but my understanding is that hosts using SLM can't oversell the RAM, the way they were with the older guaranteed/burst strategy.

For me both are already high specs for a small forum like that, mine looks like yours and Im running on 128Mb, maybe I will plane to upgrade later on 250Mb but for now 128 is so far enough if you remove cpanel of course wich is much than useless, spamassassin or antivirus and any stuff eating resource, Im using lighttpd so

I'm asking for some other people, and I think they would need a control panel vs. having to mess with command line stuff. For linux/hosting novices, cpanel makes life much easier, even if it does eat up some resources.

The best bet is to find someone who does vb specific hosting. :) Then it can be done with no headaches and at a reasonable price as well. I sent you a pm.

Go with the VPS and cpanel.
Stay away from that celeron :)

Let's say it was a P4, single core instead of the celeron? What about then?

Should be able to find a P4 2.8 GHz, 1024 megs of ram and 120 or 160 drive for between 100.00 and 130.00. With the standalone server like this compared to a VPS you would not have to be worried about over crowding of the cpus.

That's overkill for a forum of that size... :)

Well I understand that, but he asked about a P4 so I told him

softlayer has an express series of servers, which are basically tiny dedicated servers. its a little more than 100/month, but i think it would suit you well.

theres many options and what not out there just make sure that you get one you can cover the security so server doesnt get hacked no cp = higher risk of hacking if your not confiterable with it

ThePlanet have a very good promotion on.

Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz
512 MB RAM
80 GB hard disk
750 GB bandwidth
$69p/m

Looks like it'd suit your needs.

One thing I am still unclear about is whether or not a dedicated server like this, would give better or worse performance than a VPS with 1152 MB SLM RAM, that is running on dual quad core based machines.

I know there are factors, like how much the base server is loaded, but is one dedicated 2.4ghs cpu, a single hard drive and 512mb RAM (all dedicated) better than a VPS that has 1152 mb SLM guaranteed ram and that allows you to use 4 or 8 cores (when available).

This is sort of a thoeretical thing I am trying to get straight in my head. Is the portion of a very beefy (8 core, 16 gb ram, 15,000 RMP drives in Raid 10 config) better or worse than having a dedicated low-end, low ram machine?

I would recommend a good VPS from a reputed host, in that case. more ram, better processor and 15k SCSI disks!
