hey, i just bought a dedicated server to host my site and i wanted to transfer all my vbulletin files from my old server to my new one. what is the procedure in a case like this? i copied all the files in my directory and i'm assuming that if i make a SQL database the same like the original one it will work. is this correct? is there a tutorial i can follow somewhere? thanks

Instructions for moving servers are in the online manual here:
http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/moving_servers
Note: The only reliable method of backing up and restoring a database is with shell access via telnet or ssh. This is because backing up with a PHP script like that in the Admin CP or phpMyAdmin can result in PHP timeouts errors and an incomplete backup file. Please see the instructions here:
Backup:
http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/maintenance_ssh_backup
Restore:
http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/maintenance_ssh_restore
P.S. If you do not have telnet or SSH access, some people have reported success with these scripts:
MySQLDumper:
http://www.mysqldumper.de/en/index.php
MySQLHotxcopy:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134821&highlight=mysqlhotcopy
Bigdump (restore only):

if both servers have cpanel, you can easily move sites within their CP

That's if he has WHM (or then again, full backup feature might work). I'm sure his host my do that for him either way.

You would need access to both servers and follow the instructions provided by Steve above. If you do not have access to the old server and do not have a database backup then you will not be able to recover the data.
