View Full Version : List of free email domains

Hi! Im having a big problem with a few spammers using anoynomizer.com's IP masking services. It is virtually impossible to block their IP. Hence, I wish to make all users now have a unique email address and have it verified.

I would also want to block free email domains like hotmail and yahoo, and I need a list of the most popular domains.

Can someone provide me with such a list?

well here's my list but it's more suited to anime/comic related domains - 781 domains listed

I want to be able to do something similar with my forums, but instead of banning domains outright I want to be able to moderate registrations and point out on the reg page that only real ISP addresses will be accepted somewhere next to the email box. Do I have to edit register.php to do this or should I change one of my templates instead?

The problem is, however, that people with their own domains can use an account from their own domain, and multiply from there.

If you look in the Admin CP you'll see there's an option to not have this affect existing members.

Just use eva2000's "MEGA-LIST" here:

That's a list of 30,844 domains formatted for you to cut and paste into vB.

Impressive list. A lot of hard work was done there. Thanks.

Questions:

Will having 30,844 domains in my ban list bog my board down?

Are the domains we add to this list case sensitive?

Will having 30,844 domains in my ban list bog my board down?

No - I use it and there is no slow down. The only thing is that everytime you update your vB Settings in the Options section of your Admin CP, the saving is slower.

Are the domains we add to this list case sensitive?

No. Just copy and paste and it will work with both cases.

are you talking about the let users keep banned email feature? my concern with this is in most cases im not sure i would want them too, but i also dont want to penalize current members, or since my board currently only has 60 members of which maybe 1/2 or so uses a free email should i have them change their email?

I am new to vBulletin and message boards in general. Excuse me for asking however if you block all of these email providers such as hotmail and so on, what exactly are potential members to use for their email address when signing up?

If anyone could explain the thought process behind this I would appriciate it very much,
Dan

They'd use the email address given by their ISP's. That way, they can only have one email address and not just create a new account to have multiple sign ups.

ahh... I see. Does this pose a problem with the amount of members you see signing up at your sites? I have such a tiny board in which I need to build members, I feel if I make such a move I would slow the process to a crawl.

It will cut back on useless accounts being registered eg. same member reserving many usernames. So yes, it will cut down on the overall number of members, but your regular posters should not be affected much. People who really want to join will find a way. :)

Does putting this many addresses in one field have any performance affect on B>???

It slows down the loading of your vB Options page in your Admin CP considerably. :) I'm sure when a user registers, the server will be slowed as it has to go through quite a huge field. But the server load is negligible at least for my forums.

eva2000 - any new updates? ;)

Two questions:

1. How would you ban 3rd-level or higher domains from a freemail site? Like bob.freemail.net? Right now I have domains banned, but if someone comes in with a 3rd-level domain, even on a banned domain, it will accept it.

2. Is there anyway to have a central repository of freemail domains that admin can simply point to instead of having to add them in one-by-one?

TIA

I'm having a problem with banning emails..
I used the list here: http://i4net.tv/marticle/get.php?action=getarticle&articleid=30
and it banned the address 'nick@n2dreams.com' as you can tell, no part of that is in the ban list.. I cant figure out wtf is going on..

I'd really love to use this ban list but not if its banning legit emails too..

What happens when I ban e.g. yahoo.com, hotmail.com and yahoo.co.uk...if a member is already registered with one of those address, what message do they get?

You can choose to ignore this banning for existing members.

You can find a list of free emails I think in the vb3 boards here to ban. You should be able to add them to your list in vb2 just the same way I think.
