Hi All --

I'm planning a vBulletin-based forum site with the following usage estimates:

1. Estimated number of registered users = 100-200.
2. Estimated average number of simultaneous users = 20.
3. Estimated number of new posts per day: 100.

Unfortunately I really don't have a feel for the hosting requirements (i.e. GB of storage and monthly bandwidth) I'll need based on these estimates, so perhaps some of you who are more knowledgeable about this can comment?

For hosting, I'm looking at BlueHost and HostGator, as both seem to have received reasonable marks in reviews. Comments? Any other hosting companies I should consider?

In terms of vBulletin installation, does the hosting company typically do this after I provide proof of purchase of a vBulletin license?

Thanks!

- Dan

There wont be any problems for hosting company to install vBulletin if you have license. As far as hosting is concerned you can start with a shared hosting package depending on the size of your database. You can upgrade the hosting package as per your requirements when your forum grows.

That's what I figured concerning the vB install.

For my estimates:

1. Estimated number of registered users = 100-200.
2. Estimated average number of simultaneous users = 20.
3. Estimated number of new posts per day: 100.

what storage space and monthly bandwidth plans should I consider?

Well, as I said it all depends on your requirements. Looking at the stats above you can go ahead with high end shared hosting package and upgrade as per your requirements.

1. Estimated number of registered users = 100-200.
2. Estimated average number of simultaneous users = 20.
3. Estimated number of new posts per day: 100.200 users are not going to make 100 posts a day, nor are 20 of them going to be online at one time.

100 to 200 users is really a very, very small forum, and you'll be lucky to get 5 or 10 posts a day.

I would think you can run that just about anywhere (though I can recommend HostGator).

No large host is going to install vB for you.

a $3.99 a month server will support that fine

Well, the forum I'm envisioning is one which is relatively small in terms of membership, but has core members which post frequently, e.g. some threads may have bursts of quasi-realtime conversations.
