View Full Version : Email notification usually doesn't

I have my blog set up to send me an email notification when someone comments. Only very rarely does this actually happen. If it never happened it might be an entirely different problem, but it occasionally does notify me. I can't determine any pattern, though. Just for the 25 or so comments I've gotten so far, I've gotten 2 or 3 notifications.

Email works fine for me on the rest of my forum.

I do have all comments set to moderated, so perhaps it's not sending them because they need approval, but once I approve them I'm online so it doesn't notify me? Just guessing. But I did have another approval bug that required a patch.

If some vB email is working then this is a server or email box problem. Please see this page for help troubleshooting email problems:

http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/troubleshoot_email

In particular you should setup the vB email logging function and contact your host ad ask them to check the server's email logs.

Thanks, but all email is working great, except this. And this works sometimes. Occam and the fact that I've had other comment probs would suggest that there's a more specific problem.

Please follow the instrutions in my post. Since some email is working, then vB is sending all the emails it should. The next step is setting up and checking the logs. :)

Ok, thanks. I turned on logging. My forum sends out hundreds of emails per day, can I get a unique string for the notification email to search for? Hard to search for what's NOT there, even harder if you don't know what you're searching for. And I can't find anything in phrases that looks like a comment moderation approval email.

Actually I have checked and do not believe an email is sent when a comment is approved. Is there any reason you think that this is a normal feature?

Not when a comment is approved, when a comment has been made and needs approval.

Then you will need to record the time and email address when that email is sent and check it against your logs.

Please not that if vB sends one email, it sends them all. Any potential problems are at the server and/or receiving end.

A quick poll of some bloggers on my site finds that none of them are getting an email telling them a comment has been made and needs moderation. Yet they all got the email telling them about the PM I sent.

I can't find this particular setting. Just the one for instant email on comment, but that wouldn't send an email for a moderated comment (since its not officially a comment until its approved).

I suspect the couple of times I got an email was due to comments by moderators, who don't need their comments approved. My hazy memory added the bit about awaiting approval.

So where is the setting to send an email to the blog author when a comment has been made and needs approval?

Still awaiting the answer for this. I just this morning got a complaint about this from one of my bloggers.

At least you get complaints. My members just stopped using the blog. Worst $50.00 we ever spent. I hope 3.7 improves this attitude with members through additions and fixes.

Sorry, I missed that. There is no such option at this time.

i am having the exact same problem. registration and pm notifications emails do go through. but when someone subscribes to a blog, and then the blog is updated, the email does not get sent to notify of the blog update.

now, can instead of being emailed, can it be a pm? if thats possible, how do i enable this?

That is a server issue. You need to contact your host about this.
