View Full Version : Release: VButton

This is a little app to make all your buttons for you.
http://www.delhaze.com/vbutton_screen.gif
http://www.delhaze.com/vbutton_screen2.gif
It uses photoshop actions to do all the work, but you can set font colours from within the app.
It also creates any extra "Header" buttons you require, eg Links, Files etc.
It requires Photoshop 6 to be installed, and the photoshop files from the VB Graphics Kit to be extracted directly in C:\Vbutton.
It's written with Visual Basic 6, so normal runtime files are required.
There's not a lot of error checking in this version, but I wanted to get some feedback.
The finished buttons are output to C:\Vbutton\Output.
Have a play and give me some feedback, and any suggestions for the next version.
(BTW. This is my first attempt at a Visual Basic proggy, so be nice :) )
Minor Update:
Checks that the required VB Graphics Kit Files are in the correct place.
Color Picker remembers colours.
Fixed a bug in the actions for newfolder.gif etc.
Tested and Working with Photoshop Elements
Another Update:
Now does text layer colours
Includes Hot & New folder Icons
Does Icons & Smilies
Output to C:\VButton\images with subfolders for icons & smilies for easy file copy
Deletes action files after use in Photoshop ready for next use
Another Update:
Now uses "sets", where output is under the C:\Vbutton\set folder
Now saves a copy of the modified PSD files for future use
Creates a txt file record of the colours used
Progress window added
Bug fix done!

Very cool! but everytime I run it I get a Runtime Error '53' File Not Found. Hopefully you can sort this out because I have no idea what that is. :) And none of the buttons are exporting to the output folder. As soon as it finishes making all the buttons, PS closes out and the error pops up. I look in the Output folder and there's nothing.

Nice app well done but I do feel as though you have robbed Ball Bouncer for some of the credit for this as you have used an idea he brought forward and have given him no credit whatsoever for it.
I realy hope you will correct this by giving him a mention in the program as from the posts I have seen he has given much imput into this.

Now I'm getting these run-time errors -
429 -- "ActiveX component can't create object"
Could this be because of Norton AntiVirus 2k1?

The files are actuall saved in C:\Vbutton and moved to C:\VButton\Output after Photoshop closes.
I had this problem when the files that are being moved/deleted were still in use by Photoshop.
Should be able to sort this out in the next version.

Only cos I'm a member of Modshack and X-forums though :D
BTW, the actions used are not his, but without his, I wouldn't have thought of doing this.

As I said earlier, there is no error checking in this version.
I will try and add some ASAP.

I'm not sure why its doing it - it works about 1/3 of the time - and the other time I get run time errors... I don't know Visual Basic - so I can't diagnose it myself.. :) I'm just guessing because I know Norton has ActiveX content control in it. *shrug*
Great package though!

VB Team, with talk of credit, I hope you don't mind my creative use (rip-off  ) of your icon and logo graphics.
Just seemed appropriate.
Say the word and I will remove them

Mon 6th Aug '01, 3:54pm
Its not really considered a rip off the the vB graphics... That is what the Graphics Dev Kit is there for. You're just using the Dev Kit in a creative fashion.. I highly doubt they're going to kill ya just for that...

Windows ME - VBruntime 6.0 and 6.5 patch.
I placed the psd files from the gfx dev kit into my C:\drive as C:\Vbutton (without extracting folders). I then extracted the contents of the vbutton.zip file into the same directory. I then executed it from there (verifying that photoshop 6.0 was installed and it was) and the resultant error rears its ugly head:
I reinstalled and reformatted my system (Win ME making sure to update the VB files from the get go) and the results are the same.
Please advise.

I have uploaded a slightly revised version.
It checks that the required VB Graphics set files are in the correct place before starting.
The Colour Pickers now remember your last colour.
I think I've fix a bug in the actions for some of the newfolder icons.
And it actually works with Photoshop Elements, although you cant see the files being opened, just the layers swapping about. It runs very slowly compared to photoshop.
Ive also removed some of the code that forced files to be deleted at the end, as I think "in use" files could have been a problem on slower machines. The files that are left over will be overwriiten on the next use anyway.
I recommend you reset actions in Photoshop before use, and remember to move files from the output folder after use, as they will be overwritten the next time if you forget.
I wont be adding any more error checking to it, as the OLE interface to Photoshop doesn't give much scope for it, and as I have said, this is my first attempt at a VB program.
If it doesn't work for you, I'm sorry.
If it does, ENJOY !!!!

If your not getting any output, the problem causing the errors with the last version still exist, you just dont see them anymore.
Have you run the patch to get to Photoshop 6.01?
Does photoshop actually load when you click make buttons?
If it does, do you see the files being loaded and modified?
You may have to try uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop.

Photoshop 5 can't be supported as it doesn't support filenames in actions.
5.5 could be done, if enought people want it.
But seing as it works with Photoshop elements, why not download the 30 trial from adobe.com. At least that's legal.
BTW. To the people that have PM'd me asking for the PSD file kit.
You've got no chance.
I suggest you don't do it again either
as it's not clever to ask for pirated software
on the developers own forum - DUH!

Wed 8th Aug '01, 4:25am
and for font color change ?
rockergrrl
Wed 8th Aug '01, 8:39am
To change the font you'll probably have to edit the PSD files yourself... Not that hard...I had to do it a couple times....
Just select the font layer in the layer box, and on top, you'll see the text menu, and instead of the default white, you click on the white box, and pick whatever color you want... You'll have to do that with every PSD and every font layer in the PSD.
Unless he makes it a part of the a new version of the program.
*shrug*
But that's the want you do it manual, and then save each psd you change and run the program.

There still seems to be an issue with it missing a few icons.
on.gif and lock.gif are missing.
Some of the hotfolders, dot folders, and lockfolders are missing from the script.
Is there any way to get this to recognize ALL of the psd files including the /smilies, /icons, /attachment, and /polls directories underneath the /image directory??

I've tried this now numerous times. I've applied the 6.0.1 patch, tried uninstalling/reinstalling photoshop and then applying the patch again, but still none of the graphics are being outputted. I see them getting changed to the colors I want, and there are no visible errors that come up. But when Photoshop closes, nothing happens and there's nothing but the PSD files from the graphics kit and the vbutton.exe file.

As soon as I have finished the next version (adds text layer colour change), I will try and help you get it working.
It's very strange that no files are actually being saved, because once photoshop is open and the files are being modified, the control is with Photoshop, and not VButton, Photoshop is simply responding to actions files, which include the save part.

For some odd reason, I do not see the same image that is on the front page.
I re-downloaded the file vbutton.zip from the 1st page and I still get "what appears to be or what one might ASSUME to be" the earlier version of it.
Any ideas?
It does create the images..just not the cool extra ones on the right hand side (smiles, icons, etc). :)
Any advice?

Fri 10th Aug '01, 2:24am
The latest version is now up.
Important: Before you run it, if you have used a previous version you should reset your Actions. If you dont, then Photoshop will use them rather than the new versions, as Photoshop runs the first action it finds with the correct name.
First make sure Actions are showing.
Form the Window Menu choose "Show Actions"
Then to reset press the Right Arrow under the Actions Palette and choose reset actions.
Click OK
http://www.delhaze.com/vbuttonani.gif
Whats new:
Added Text Layer colour support
Added Hot & New folder buttons
Added Icons
Added Smilies
Actions are deleted after use, so need to reset actions
Output to C:\Vbutton\images, C\Vbutton\images\icons, C:\Vbutton\smilies - like the real web site

Do me a favour, while the program is running and PS is doing its stuff, can you open explorer and see if images are being output to C:\Vbutton. (Might need to do a refresh F5 key)
They get put there by PS and copied then deleted by Visual Basic.
I'm thinking that just the file copy part is not working, but the output and the delete stage are.
And for the record what OS and filesystem are you using?

The gif files are saved by Photoshop to the C:\Vbutton folder during the actions, every time you see a new image being loaded by Photoshop, the previous images should have already been saved.
Thats why I want you to check the Vbutton folder while Photoshop is running.
If the error is as you described above, you would get the error within seconds of Photoshop opening.
Its only after Photoshop has closed at the very end that all the gifs are moved to the Vbutton/images folder.

Have you done this manually, I'd like to see an example.
Although it could be done, I doubt it would be easy to make it so an image other than yours could be used, which wouldn't make it usable by others.

Then that's the problem. It's a file copy error. But when I check in the Vbutton folder, there's nothing except the Graphic Developer PSD files and the vbutton.exe file. I was refreshing the listing while PS was running and the only thing that was coming up were the actions themselves, but no .gif files.

If the files are not being saved by Photoshop something very strange is going on.
Vbutton makes the .atn files, patches them if needed, and tells Photoshop to open them and run them. Photoshop itself saves the gif files.
I don't know what else to suggest

In the HEADER BUTTONS.psd the only layer name i have thats in lowercase if profile(user cp) all the others start with a uppercase letter, and the program wont support them, it says: Could not find the correct "layer "calender"" in the current file,... or something like that!
I renaimed the layers, and now all works!

Ok, I'm with you now. I didn't read it carefully, and assumed you wanted the text color changed, not the actual text.
It could be done, but it's a massive amount of work. My brain is spinning just trying to figure out how it would work.
I might do it anyway.
If I do, i'll let you know.
To satisfy my curiosity, can you PM me, and tell me what you want to change and why?

I renaimed the layers, and now all works!
Oh you were using modified PSD files. !!!!!! :o
Any mod to the layer names, or saving a PSD with different layers selected/hidden/visible is likely to break the actions.
It can be done if your careful though.
One of the original files has 3 layers all called the same - that was fun to workaround - NOT.

The stars are made using both the standard gradient (for the off stars) and the new/on gradient (for the on stars) just like the originals.

I've uploaded probably the final version.
It now uses "sets" where output is to
C:\Vbutton\setname
The major difference with this one is that it saves the modified PSD files, so that they can be used to create additonal changes and/or extra buttons later.
Output is to C:\Vbutton\setname\psd\
Images are now output to C:\Vbutton\setname\images\ etc.
A text file is also created with the colours used.
There's a stay on top progress window so if anything goes wrong you can see at what point it's failing at.
Please reset actions before use, as per my previous instructions

i found this bug with the stars, all stars are OK except for the 0stars it only contains the black outline, no fill, so that when i use it it shows the background of my board, at it shouldn't do that!
I also found out that the poll icon it exports isn't on a transparent background, is that right? or am i doing something wrong?

I'm sure this might be considered off topic from the general ideology of this post but I am a bit confused about something.
How can one use a different set of smilies/icons/polls/attachment images for each individual style?
I know that you specify the images path in your style, but that doesn't help with the "other" images for lack of better terms.
Delhaze
Tue 14th Aug '01, 4:08pm
I think it works like this.
Each styleid has its own attachment and polls sub folder under the { imagespath}
The smilies and icons (by default) always come from the sub folder under the { imagespath} from styleid =1
The attachment & polls are not included in the Graphics Kit BTW (unless there very well hidden).
So just copy the defaults into each style folder.
If you need to modify them, you will have to edit the gif files directly. Paint Shop Pros' colorize feature would be good for the polls.
I don't really see why you would want to change the attachment gifs as they are the default icon for the associated application.
Unless you are anti MS of course.
Mods please correct if inaccurate.

Tue 14th Aug '01, 6:02pm
I have looked all over my FTP directory listing looking to place the smilies and icons folders into my STYLE directory of the particular style that I have changed via the vbutton program.
The problem that I have found is that it appears as though the smilie and icon paths are hardcoded in the db and don't actually parse off of the {imagesfolder} replacement variable.
This is a guess and I could be wrong, but placing a new folder called Havoc-Captain underneath the images directory and then placing the smilie and icon folders underneath Havoc-Captain did not yield appropriate results when I pointed my style to that image directory. :/

Sounds right, as I have my default style running from the default images folder.
The forums wouldn't really work any other way, if you had multiple icon & smilie folders you would see different icons & smilies depending on the style you chose. So if a user picked a happy face, someone using a different style would either get a different image, or even no image.

Good point.
I'm wondering if you can combat propriatary with propriatary..IE: Hardcode the path of your style folder (images) in your template?
Anyone have any ideas? I've gotten up to a point where I can change the smilies in the javascript box (per style), the posting icons (per style), but when you select any of them, they revert BACK to the original vbb ones. :/

Hi again!
I've though about the idea of the background image thing, and also changing fonts, so i fixed up a sketch of what i think would be cool, here(description underneeth the image):
http://ozone.subnet.dk/Sketch.jpg
I changed it a bit in fireworks so that the sktch would look more realistic, when the "Colored Buttons." is selected the "Background Image." stuff shows up as the inactive grey color, and nonselectable, the same goes for the colors when the "Background Image." is selected! The font dropdown should contain all the fonts located on the users computer, or the standar windows ones! and it should be selectable at both the background image and the colored button selection!
... dont you think this would be a good idea?

Some of the actions start working on the currently selected layer, and if your psd file has a different one it will break the action script. Also certain layers are showing, and certain layers are hidden in the original, the actions scripts are based on this.
If you do use modifed PSD files, you need to make sure when you save it, that the layer names are identical, the same layers are showing or hiding, and the same layer is selected as in the original.

The gradient change recorded in the Vbutton action files is top to bottom, or top left corner to bottom right corner, depending on the button. This is the same as the original buttons.
If you make manual changes, VButton will just overid them, as it just plays the action files.

Instead of changing "search" to "find" you would use the "extra header" to make the "find" button.
Just type "find" in any of the available slots. This would create a new button called "top_find.gif".
You would then delete "top_search.gif", and rename "top_find.gif" to "top_search.gif", or just amend your template to use the new "top_find.gif".

It checks for certain registry keys to see if Photoshop is installed.
I have now found out that Photoshop only creates these keys after you have run it (and closed it) the first time.
This may be the cause of the problem you mentioned.

This is not the best place to ask this question, it it not specifically to do with Vbutton, which is an automatic button creation application. You need help with manually creating buttons.
Ask this question in the main "vBulletin Grpahics and Styles" forum, and you'll get a better response. Who knows, I might even respond myself.
Edit: Nevermind, I've done a little tutorial for you here

Sorry to be such a dolt .. and I want to thank Delhaze in advance for what looks like such a wonderful program ... but where would one get the vBulletin 2 Graphics Development Kit?
Note: I'm an admin on our boards at http://forums.charrgrimmfate.com/ ... I didn't purchase the license, my co-worker did .. and he also installed the boards ... I'm just helping out and trying to make our boards look better. (I can however access this information from him) ... so if "The vBulletin 2 Graphics Development Kit" was in the original purchase/download I can get that from him ... I just need to know where to look.
Hope this doesn't sound like a stupid post .. and thanks in advance for any help.

The "The vBulletin 2 Graphics Development Kit" is available from the members area.
You will need to obtain the Cutomer Number & Customer Password from your co-worker to access the area.

Hey, I got the error "The required apllication: Photoshop 6 does not appear to be installed.". But Im actually following the discussion here and I installed Adobe Elements to run with this.
Is there something I need to do, to make it look for Elements and not Photohop 6?
Thanks alot.

Wow, i'm honoured your even thinking of trying it. :D
The following registry keys are queried to see if either are installed.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,Software\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\1.0, ApplicationPath
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,Software\Adobe\Photoshop\6.0, ApplicationPath
Photoshop does not create it's key until it has been closed the first time.
Elements may well do the same thing.

Dang still is not working. I checked my registry and made sure everything was the same as you showed above. And it is. I then opened and closed elements and I still get this error.
This is a kick ass little app. If I can get it working it will save me so much time on client work. Lots of clients want to keep alot of the existing buttons, but to their colors. If I could get this working youd be saving me so much time I couldnt even express a thank you for.
I guess I will just have to pay and get 6.0. I have 5.5, from my employer.
Keep up the good work bro. And hopefully I can get it to work. :(

Try this reg file fix, it adds the required key for Photoshop Elements which I don't think the trial version adds.
If that doesn't work I'll compile a version without the check just 4 u :D
Thsi reg file is for Win2K, and assumes install on C Drive, amend as needed.

Your wonderful program has been working flawlessly for me save one little thing: I can't seem to get the standard button (profile, pm, email, www, search, buddy, etc.) icon color to change from the off-white default. By standard button icons, I'm refering to the letter icon for the email button, for example. Or the house icon for the www button, the magnifying glass for the search button, etc.
I assume that the "Icon Base Colour" is the color that controls this, but even if it isn't, I've tried all the options. Is this not yet a feature, or am I doing (or not doing) something moronic. I have reset my actions...
Any help appreciated.
A+ on your gem of a program.

A+ on your gem of a program.
The icon base colour is for the actual icon files, not the icons within other buttons.
And your right this isn't a current feature.
Those icons are not off-white, they are a combination of white, yellow& sometimes grey pixels. Changing just the yellow pixels works ok with light colours, but with darker colours the white pixels need changing as well.
I'm afraid it is unlikely I will be adding this feature in the future.

Open PS, open the button psd file you want to edit.
On the right is a layers box, click the layer with the text to make it active.
Then click the *T* in the tools panel to activate the text tool.
Hover your pointer over the text untill you see a cursor, highlight the text and overtype with whatever.
Click the pointer in the tools panel to de-activate the text tool when you are finished.
Click "save for the web" select gif format and you're done.

i tried this yesterday for the first time and i have to say that it's one of those rare simple tools that make you say out loud (even if ur alone in the room), "this is so cool!" i couldn't believe that i was making different color button sets in less than a minute each!
thanks delhaze!
one suggestion tho.. i noticed that when using a dark color for text, the dark drop-shadow makes the text hard to read. can you give the option to change the drop-shadow color or turn it off? both would be even better..

Is it possible to choose other fonts?
Copy/paste doesn't work too good in the fields.

I am running Windows XP Professional and I also use vButton on some accounts to make a quick set of buttons and it works great, no errors, no crashing, nothing.
I would have to say it would be something else that is causing the conflict, at least that is my opinion (although I am not quite sure what it could be).
By the way, I have ran it on both Photoshop 6.0 & Photoshop 6.01 with no troubles.

hmm i'm not sure if this is a bug or i'm just stupid, probably the latter by anyway.
When it creates the arrows
it uses the two gradients and then the light gradient for the actual arrow. Is this right or have i just screwed it up?
I presumed it would use the icon base colour but for some reason it hasn't.
