Is VB compatible with the latest versions of PHP, ie 5.x? Are their any issues our there to be aware of if so?

Yes it is fully compatible and no there is no issues

Please note, we may not be able to provide support if you use a version of PHP that is not marked as Generally Available. Beta and Release Candidate versions should be avoided on live sites.
