our web hosting is crud ... well its great apparently if you live in the US ... which the majority of our members dont (uk) .. so we need to move to uk hosting.

Now we have done this before and the people we previously moved to did all the work for us - transfered all the files, databases, etc ... so one day it was suddenly there as if nothing had happened.

Now - over time our sites been added to and altered ... so this time rather than just dump the entire site over to the new place - we wanted to keep the old place running and operational, which setting up the new place from scratch.. so its nice and clean, we can have all the latest versions of software straight off, then apply all our needed mods, and transfer over our database .. keeping it private from the public till we are ready - then I assume we can just transfer the domain name - and make the new site live?

im a little fuzzy on how this all works - but I gather we can install a new version of VBulletin if its called 'test site' or something ? ..

when we transfer the database, what does that typically contain ? users, usergroups?, threads, posts, ?

if we get new hosting ... setup VB on it fresh... apply VBA portal to it.. install whatever style we are want to use.. at what point is it best to copy the old database over ? should this be done at the start ? or as close to the end when we are ready to move the site over?

can a database be applied again at a later date?

Im thinking of getting some forums, threads and posts in place to help be build the site, and a lot of different users on there to see how they look.

Best thing to do here is instal your fresh copy of VB and do all of the alterations you need to the styles ect and move the database at the last moment.

When you transfer a domain name it can take anything from a few hours to a few days to properly resolve the nameservers so I would suggest shutting down the forum for a few days, but tell people when this is happening so they know what is going on.

If you are looking for UK hosting PM me as I have a couple of suggestions if you are interested.

I've several forums aimed at the UK market which are hosted in the USA without any problems whatsoever.

I think your grief may be more down to the quality of the hosting company rather than where they are geographically positioned in the world.

What I will say from my own experiences, is that many UK hosting companies do not like forums due to the high levels of traffic generated, so just be cautious who you sign up with!

Out of the frying pan into the fire comes to mind...
