Hi How are you?

I am looking to buy/rent a new server. I found 2 interesting deals, But i am bit confused which one to get.

Server 1

CPU1: Intel Xeon 2.8 Ghz (Dual Core)
CPU2: Intel Xeon 2.8 Ghz (Dual Core)
RAM: 2GB DDR ECC
HDD1: 160GB 7,200RPM HDD
Bandwidth: 2000GB
Switch Port: 100 MbitServer 2

Core2Duo E6650
2GB DDR2 RAM
320GB 7.2K RPM SATA HDD
1500 Gigs Bandwidth
100Mbps Port
Can anyone tell which one is more powerful and better performing server ? I think its XEON but the new terms from Intel are confusing.

Sincerely,

What is the speed on the Core2Duo? 2.13 GHz? Then if so, the xeon is more powerful, but you must also consider that DDR2 ram is an improvement on DDR, I think overall they will have a very similar performance.

The Xeon is NOT faster, not by a long shot. Those Xeon chips are Netburst architecture (old and busted) and the Core2Duo is Core architecture (new hotness). While not a server-class chip, the Core2Duo is going to stomp the Xeons.

I forget to mention before the both XEON CPU are Dual core... Both of these offer i got have $10 difference... and i mainly looking in faster stable server which wouldn't need to change/upgrade for a year or more.

Well, then in that case the gap is a lot closer. In some workloads the 4 Netburst cores will outrun the 2 Core cores (DB usage) and in others the Core CPU will be faster (web services).

How much bandwidth do you need for your site? If more than 1TB/month then you may want to go with the Xeon system as it has a higher allowance and would allow for more growth of traffic.

Core2DUO is more faster than XEON. Anyway the XEON is used for server Core2Duo and Dual Core are used for workstation.

I agree with you.

Yeah, Core2DUO is faster and will perform better than Intel Xeon.

What you are planning to host on the server?
